Internal travel in mexico

We are four girls going to mexico for six weeks at the end of june (flying into and out of mexico city). What is the best way of travelling between places and do you have any suggestions as to what should not be missed? We want to see as much of mexico as possible (north and south). we would be grateful for any advice!

(If you haven't already) you might want to read the Mexico branch of Thorn Tree BB on the www.lonelyplanet.com site. If has a more youthful backpack style of traveling, that might be more appropriate to the trip you're starting to plan. (The best way to travel within Mexico is the bus, unless it's a long distance and you can/want to afford airfare or car rental.)

Katie,

I would agree that the best way to travel in Mexico is by bus, since there are only a couple of trains (mostly tours, like the one going out of Guadalajara to the tequila production facilities). Internal flights can be quite expensive (Mexico City to Cancun $250 - $350 dlls). Buses will take you everywhere and there is a wide range of categories to which to choose from according to your budget.

Good luck,

McH

Mexico is so nice and safer than what people think...
Do not miss Mexico's Archeological Museum, THE best Museum in all the country, one of the nicest in Latin America...
You have to visit GUANAJUATO, the city is perfect for young travellers, for the University, prices are cheap for food but not for rooms... We stayed a few times at the Molino del Monestario.
good location & clean. go to Puebla city, the place for tiles making, neet city. ZACATECAS is one of my favorite city to visit, GUARDALAVACA & TAXCO TOO.

Enjoy Mexico

Good advice in these postings. Would totally recomment the bus service. Either first class (primera) or luxury (lujo or exjecutivo) provide movies, reserved seat, etc. If you want to check schedules, go to www.ticketbus.com.mx for fares and schedules of all lines--a spanish site but easy to understand.
Air can be expensive, but cheaper fares can be found. For example, Mexico City to Cancun can be booked with several airlines for about $140US.

Robert
