In Buenos Aires, 12 Can DIne for $649-a Dinner Report

Last night 12 of us including the world famous Dr. Dawggy and the even more famous AV Roster dined. We ate a great parrilla that AV found for us. It totallly met my request for a place that I wouldn“t find alone. No tourists in sight.

We ordered appetizers for the table. There were empanads, chorizo and poroveleta. The proveleta is a delicious baked cheese. Folks ordered a wide variety of foods from steaks to pasta to vegetable dishes. Everyone seemed to enjoy. I had a terrifc bife de chorizo (steak). It was rare and juicy and fabulous. For dessert there was cheesecake, a huge brownie/ice cream/meregue confection, and other ice creams. I can“t think of anywhere at home where you could have 3 courses, bottled water and wine for 12 people for under $250.

Even better than the food was the conversation. It was great to meet with other folks passionate about travel and about Buenos Aires. It was a terrific evening.

Thanks so much to AV for organizing everything and to his lovely wife for driving us.

Natalie

La Provision is in Villa Devoto...way off the tourist track...way, way, way off...
It is a neighborhood parrilla. As Natalie reported the food was fine, the service quite good, the atmosphere was warm and the company was great! U$250 for dinner for 12 including tip...quite a bargain I would say...It might cost you another 20 pesos each way from the city center or Recoleta for a cab....

My comments:

1) Sacrilege!!! NO ONE is more famous than drdawggy, not even yours truly!! LOL!!!! We also had the immense privilege of the presence of a distinguished poster from the tripadvisor.com Argentina forum, none other than the scholarly Punta Lugano and his lovely Argentine wife. Of course, forum member marymarathons was also there with her family, but I'll let her write about that.

2) The $649 teachtotravel mentions are pesos, which is not quite clear in this thread's title.

3) I was not too happy with my choice of this restaurant. As drdawggy says, it is "way off the tourist track...way, way, way off...", which can, from a certain point of view, be considered a blessing and was the main reason I chose it. But, there is the time and cost of getting there, to be considered. By my standards, as a local, the food was all right, but I found it somewhat overpriced, particularly for a place where the cutlery is not changed between courses. Of course, as teachtotravel well says, it is quite cheap by American standards and even more so by European standards, but that is the case with food all over Argentina.

4) All factors considered, unless you are in or near the "barrio" called "Villa Devoto", I would NOT suggest going there specially for lunch or dinner. There are MANY at least equally cheap non-touristy places more easily accesible from the areas where most tourists stay.

I hope you will enjoy the rest of your stay, teachtotravel and marymarathons and I very much look forward to your trip reports.

I think you are being overly hard on yourself AV....The quality of food was good...and it was nice to see that there is night and restaurant life outside of Puerto Madero, Recoleta, and Palermo. This alone made the trip worthwhile. I thought you listened and responded well to Natalie's request for a place sin touristas! Puntalugano is a great conversationalist with a rich knowledge of the politics and economics of Argentina...and his lovely wife has some interesting stories to tell about her family...

I enjoyed very much spending the evening with a a group of first time visitors who wanted so much more out of their vacation than a tour of the main tourist sites! Thanks to all for a delightful evening...

Thanks for all your posts. We are leaving on August 26th and I can't wait. It's my first trip to South America. We usually do Europe, by car, and go to all the way out places. We may get to this restaurant. Thanks again.

So sorry it has taken me a few days to post. We have been busy enjoying this fascinating city!

My family and I had a wonderful time at the forum members dinner. I believe it will be one of the highlights of our visit in Buenos Aires. All of us- my husband, daughter, niece, and sister-in-law agreed that the food was quite good. We ordered a variety of dishes and did a good job of sampling the menu. We shared two of the huge tartufa desserts which were truly luscious!

As for the location, I appreciated the opportunity to visit a part of Buenos Aires which I would not have visited on my own.

As mentioned here, the conversation was stimulating and truly enjoyable. We learned so much about Buenos Aires and Argentina from Punta, dr 'd' and AV.

AV, I can't thank you enough for hosting an unforgetable evening in Buenos Aires!!!

It was a pleasure to organize this forum members' dinner. The company was great and I hope there will be many more similar meetings!

Have a great time in our country.

Go to a River game instead. River is more civil and a better team.
