Hotels in Costa Rica?

Hello! We would like to do a 5 day (4 night) trip at the end of August (for Labor Day) to Costa Rica.

We have looked at the following hotels - does anyone have any advice on which ones are good? We would love to have the hotel on the beach but we also want to explore the jungle and wildlife - we are not into diving. But we love nature, wildlife, sailing, hiking, and exploring the culture.

Any recommendations on these hotels or any other hotel recommendations?

Si Como No Hotel http://www.sicomono.com

Casa Corcovado Jungle Lodge http://www.casacorcovado.co.cr

Caña Blanca Beach and Rain Forest Lodge http://www.soldeosa.com/canablanca/home.htm

Shawanda Lodge http://greencoast.com/shawandha/index-eng.htm

Hotel Villas Gaia: http://www.villasgaia.com/

The Los Sueños Marriott Beach and Golf Resort

La Mariposa Hotel http://www.lamariposa.com

Tulemar Bungalows http://www.tulemar.com

Tango Mar http://www.tangomar.com

Colores del Pacifico http://www.coloresdelpacifico.com

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thank you,

Anne

Anne, I think it would make sense for you to first decide in which part of Costa Rica you want to stay and then narrow down your choices of hotels to that area. Costa Rica is a small country but has a lot of diversity in terms of plant and animal life, climate etc. Also, Costa Rica is not very easy to get around - international flights fly only to San Jose and then you would have to drive a few hours or fly to any beach destination.

Given your interests, it sounds like Manuel Antonio may be the best place for you. Keep in mind that depending on your flights you may have to spend the first and last nights of your stay in San Jose area so 4 nights may really be not worth it. Manuel Antonio is 1/2 hour by plane from San Jose or 3-4 hours by car (you should not drive after dark which is 6pm year round).

First do the text search on this forum and decide on two-three places you want to stay in. With only four nights I think you should stay in one place and before or after your trip if your flight is late or very early maybe you will need to stay in San Jose or somewhere near the airport.

Dear Iza/Ann:

Thank you for your replies - we want to just stay in one place due to our short timeline.

We have looked at MA and it looks nice - except we would love to stay right on the beach. How late are the last flights out of San Jose to some of these locations (MA, Corcovado, Jaco, Guanacaste)?

We are having a hard time making up our mind - because everything looks beautiful.

Another 2 places we just looked at are:
Hotel Punta Islita (in Guanacaste) and Villa Caletas (near Jaco)

Thank you,

Anne

Anne,
I will be staying at La Mariposa when I go to CR in September. My traveling companion (who's been to Manuel Antonio on several occasions) has stayed here before and loves it. I've also seen positive comments on this forum about Si Como No and another hotel, Makanda by the Sea.

Anne, a problem you will run into is that domestic flights from San Jose to beach destinations are in the morning only with the latest flights being around 1pm. (Check Sansa's schedule at www.flysansa.com)
In Manuel Antonio, most hotels are up on the hill so you will not be on the beach. I think Tulemar Bungalows has beach access and its own little beach - I heard very good things about it.

Actually Villa Caletas may be a good option for you since it is only about 2 hours by car from San Jose. If your flight arrives around mid-day you could have a driver take you to Villa Caletas that same day. Villa Caletas usually has great "green season" specials.

The best beachfront hotel we stayed at in Costa Rica was Hotel Capitan Suizo in Tamarindo. However, Tamarindo is 1 hour by plane or 5 hours by car from San Jose.

For a romantic, remote location: check www.laparios.com

Unspoiled nature. A 10 min walk to the beach. Heaven on earth.
