Hotel Monasterio Oxygen-enriched Rooms

Hi,

Altitude sickness! I have read many postings on this issue, with varying advice. We will be staying at the Hotel Monasterio at Cusco, which apparently has oxygen-enriched rooms. Has anyone stayed in one of these rooms? Does it help or hinder the accilimatisation? We will only be there for a short time. I guess, currently, my theory is if you really did get very sick it may be good to retreat to the room (while the rest of the family went out and saw the sights - pity, but perhaps from the sounds of it may be how you would feel). But does it work? Especially for the surcharge of $US25 per day?

Just interested in any experiences. It's quite an expensive place to stay in any case, but sounds fabulous.

Hi Lorikeet,

You might want to read this posting. http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34474715

The biggest indication of how you will adapt to the altitude is your past experiences at high altitudes.

$25 seems like a very small add-on to the already steep rates at the Monasterio. The oxygen will help you sleep better and you will enoy your trip more because of it.

Maybe some others who have actully stayed and used the oxygen will add their comments.

It turned out that my husband and I both got food poisoning the day before we arrived in Cuzco so we spend the whole day in our room and had the oxygen piped in. Anything to help us feel better was done and I am grateful for it. If it helps you sleep, go for it - big deal - so your trip will cost you a few more bucks!!

I can see using the O2 if one is ill, but my husband and I stayed at the Monasterio in September and slept like babies (and we are in our late 50s). we really enjoyed the hotel, especially the breakfast, which was to die for!
