hotel in la fortuna
My son is on his way to la fortuna and had a great time surfing. Can anyone suggest hotels in la fortuna that are mid range ($70 ish) where he could get a good view of the volcano with a lava view. Originally we thought to stay in the arenal observatory lodge, but he has been told it is too far from everything. he also plans to horse back ride, go canyoning and other similiar sporting activities. Thanks for your thoughts and recommendations.

If the volcano is putting a show ...every body will see it from La Fortuna to El Castillo...in a clear night...some places like Arenal Observatory will have some kind of better view...but lava ...can be and you will see it from everywhere that I mentioned...guarantee...that includes the little hotel El Sesteo...

Last week when we were there, the only hotels that had a "lava" (actually rolling hot rocks) view, when it wasn't obscured by clouds, were those to the northwest, southwest, and south such as Arenal Observatory Lodge, Lost Iguana, and Arenal Lodge above Lost Iguana.

The Arenal Hotel had the best views. I was there on my honeymoon and we saw the volcano erupt 5 times a day AT LEAST!!! We wathced the lava flow from the pool and our room and the room sometimes shook. But it was awesome and we never felt unsafe. They also have a shuttle that brings you to the hot springs. Good Luck!
