Well... I *love* Puerto Vallarta but August is considered the worst month of the year for heat, humidity, and possibility of rain.

If you want a newer 4-star kind of resort hotel situation, Nuevo Vallarta (1/2 hour north of town) or The Marina (near the airport) are two areas. If you want to be able to walk around in town (siteseeing, shopping, restaurants) then you might rather stay downtown or on the "southside".

Camino Real, Krystal, Westin, Casa Magna Marriott are favorites of the nicer resorts.

p.s. If you decide to stay in town, and with 13 people, you might look into renting a couple of condos on Playa Los Muertos (beach) or in El Centro.

I was there last August, and it was really hot and humid, but we still enjoyed it. We didn't do any jungle tours, though; it was just too hot. But it was great for sitting under the palapa at the hotel beach and swimming, then going into town in the evening, and eating at one of PV's great restaurants...
At this time of year, a nice beach is really important, and the Camino Real hotel has a great little one, private & no time share hawkers, which is VERY Nice!
If you have lots of dough to spend, the Four Seasons Punta Mita looks great, but it's a 40 minute drive from the town of PV.

suze had a good idea. There are a lot of very beautiful condos or villas for rent in PV that might be better than a hotel for such a big group...
just do a search for Puerto Vallarta vacation rentals...
