Gap Yucatan tour with group OR Belize solo?

Hi, I have been doing much research lately about Belize and it looks enthralling, especially the Mayan ruins and the relaxing vibe and the warm tropical snorkelling, tubing. I have booked some time off work and wanted to do a one week trip somewhere before the winter and the workload fully hits here in central Canada. If I go to Belize, I would go to San Ignacio, probably stay at the Midas resort or the Clarissa Falls resort and then head over to Caye Caulker. However I have also found a one week Gap tour throughout the Yucatan peninsula that includes Merida, Chichenitza, Playa Del Carmen. The great appeal of that as a solo female traveller is being immediately part of a group. I have done some solo trips but the ones I tend to prefer are ones where I find an immediate support network, such as a tour, or staying with a family while learning Spanish in Ecuador.

So, my question is: Will I be spending most of my time alone if I go to Belize solo, that is, outside of the day tours? I know there is a hostel on Caye Caulker, but sometimes even hostels are hit and miss depending on how many people are staying there and whether they are friendly etc. Are there other solo travellers who can give me their insight on this? Also, I should add that I am over 35, but I can mix with all ages. Thank you!

Sure, mostly likely yes.

I travel solo often myself, but I LIKE to go it alone. I wouldn't want tobe part of a tour group, really don't even care if I meet people or not. So I'm thinking my personal opinion and experiences are not going to really be much help to your question.

I agree that you'd have more company on a tour, though I'd prefer to plan and travel by myself, too. For what it's worth, the Yucatán is an easy place to plan out a trip on your own, too. Our photo collections and trip reports are below if you're interested. Happy trails, whatever you decide!

Hi everyone, Thanks very much for your input and the great travel references. I am leaning towards the Yucatan and that GAP trip simply for the comfort of the structure. This particular trip doesn't have a big schedule, so I will do my own thing but still have a collective to be connected to. Thanks for the heads up about it though. I will do a search for comments about it.
