I had the most amazing seafood soup at the Mirador outside of Alajuela. A huge bowl chock full of tiny crabs, mussels, scallops, even a little octopus, for just a few dollars. This restaurant is not easy to get to. We walked quite a ways from our hotel in the pitch dark (it gets dark so early there!) but a cab driver would know the way. The restaurant itself was very dark inside, and no one spoke English, but our waiter was very helpful: he even gave us a flashlight to read the menu by! The view (mirador) was spectacular: all of San Jose spread out below us with lights twinkling. It reid the seafood soup at several other restaurants and it was always good, but this was quite special.

As above, gallo pinto con huevos with Salsa Lisano and the casado plate lunch, especially the fried banana! Also grilled fresh fish for dinner with steamed veges, including the chayote squash. Hey, how about a burger with some of the freshest beef you will ever taste? And don't forget your first cup of cafe con leche the morning after you arrived. While we're on the subject of beverages, try a cerveza Imperial on a hot afternoon and everone should have at least one shot of guaro, the the local firewater made from sugar cane.
Enjoy!
