Restaurants on STX

We didn't try any expansive restaurants, other than the Terrace at the Buccaneer. We tried 3 local restaurants, Kim's, Harvey's and Zanny. We also had meals at the Mermaid at the Buccaneer.

Kim's
This is my favorite. We had Conch Creole style and Red Snapper. Both dishes were good. The red snapper was well marinated, maybe a little overcooked since the meat was tough. But the flavor was good. I had conch at every restaurant and Kim's was the best. I also had a local drink, it was bitter and sweet. But it tasted and smelled like soap to me. I forgot the name, don't try that local drink.

Harvey's
Harvey's portion was plentiful. We tried Conch stew, BBQ chicken and Chicken soup. The conch stew was made with curry and was ok. Conch had a strange taste. My husband really enjoyed the BBQ chicken. My kid liked the soup. The soup was thick with all kinds of root vegetables. I tried ginger beer and liked it very much. I think it is a local drink worth trying. I saw locals order goat meat at Harvey's maybe that is what Harvey's really good at. I regret we didn't try that instead.

Zanny's
We ordered conch stew and pork chop stew. Both stews were tomato based, tasted like Portuguese food. But we didn't like much.

The Terrace
We ordered Mussels, Lamb Ribs and a Greek Salad. Other than being pricy(the lamb cost 32 dollars). The food wasn't bad at all.

The Mermaid Cafe
We had Chicken Wings, Conch Salad and Greek Salad. The salads were good. The wings were ok.

Restaurants on STJ

Fish Trap
We had Tuna with Wasabi sauce and New England Lobster. Both were excellent. However, my husband complained about that they plated the lobster in a fried chicken style basket and a layer of paper. The juice leaked all over the table and his cloth. My tuna was excellent. The restaurant was very family friendly.

The Skinny Legs
Great Hamburgers. Friendly owner. Our kid enjoyed playing with the condiment packages on the table so we had a wonderful and peaceful lunch. Loved this place.

Woody's
We had hamburger and seafood plate #1. My husband complained the hamburger tasted like too much filler. My seafood plate was ok. However, many people like to come to this place for happy hour. It was recommanded by multiple locals.

Uncle's Joe's BBQ
The BBQ was great. It tastd good and wasn't expensive. Generous portion. The store doesn't have a sign. The wait can be long, better call ahead and order.

The Chinese restaurant on the 2nd foor of the Star Fish market.
Very authentic American Chinese food. My husband liked it.

So glad to read you had a good time. Please post a trip report. It's pathetic, but some of us can't get enough of these reports, and many folks get great information and perspective from personal accounts.

Baby Stuff

I posted a thread about what to bring for the little one. I brought almost everything everyone suggested.

- Suntan lotion
- Diaper
- SPF cap, cover his neck (like flap happy)
- sunscreen shirt (great)
- bug repllent
- DVD player (wonderful)
- snack
- wipes
- floaty (sun smart, I saw another ma used the same one at Truck Bay )

I brought enough night time diaper and some day time diaper. The day we arrived, we went to Pueblo super market to get milk and a small bag of day time diaper.

What I wished I had brought is a carton of soy milk. My kid had upset stomach on the island. It was not easy to find soy milk.

Just won an auction on Skyauction.com for the Chenay Beach Resort on St Croix. $159 for a garden view cottage or $199 for an oceanview cottage. Not bad for an in season rate. Plan to go back for five days either before or after our Barbuda trip 13-19 Feb depending on flight schedules and house hunt again. Can't wait

Congrats HowardC! Sounds like a great deal and a great deal less than we'll be spending at the Buccaneer at the same time

Let us know if you go to STX AFTER Barbuda--we'll be there then and would love to welcome you back to the Buccaneer!

I want to share some good vedio footage my husband got at the Buck Island and Watermelon Cay. Still working on it, need to figure out some technical issues. Will post my trip report and share with you all with the pictures!

Carol--Going to St Croix after Barbuda. Will arrive on 19 Feb and depart on 24 Feb. Will coordinate more as the trip draws closer. If you have Owa's e-mail address she has mine and you can get it from her.

Ghengis--Haven't forgotten you. E-mail on the way.

Christie -

I think we tried our best to have a good vacation and over all, it was pretty good. My husband had a wonderful time. Our son loved to play on the beach. I was so happy to find out that he could play with sand for a long time and just by himself. All I did was sitting on a beach chair and watching. He also loved to be in the water and watched the waves wash over his feet.

I am very happy and proud that we had a good time at the Buck Island and we walked the trail to Watermelon cay.

We also had wonderful time visiting the Westin. My son loved watching those parrots. We walked from cage to cage and back and forth.

The only problem we had was that he had upset stomach one day. He suck his thumb a lot. It is very hard to keep his hands clean.

It is depressing to come back to our normal life in Houston.

Ghengis,
On our trip with the kids in June 05, my then 2 1/2 yr old son had an upset stomach oneday, which made him real fussy. We also had to keep a check on the diaper as we did not want his bottom to become raw. That beach day was rough!
