Driving from Arenal to Manuel Antonio
I understand from other postings that driving from Arenal (we're staying at the Tabacon Resort) to Manuel Antonio is a comfortable 6-hours drive.
We travel with two kids (4 & 9) in February, and would like to ask which place of interest between Arenal and MA you would recommend staying for about an hour.
Also, any recommendations for restaurants in Quepos?
thanks...

The drive is a good 6 hours. Just relax and enjoy it. We had a driver and no kids, so I can't help you on that front.
Regarding Quepos restaurants...a wide range! Dos Locos is popular with the english-speaking crowd, and reasonably priced. El Gran Escape also caters to the North American contingent. If your kids prefer 'homestyle' food you'll be OK at either of these. Cafe Milagro on the north side is also comfortable. If you want to go more 'Tico' try any of the sodas in town - just pick one that looks good to you! There are any number of places on the road to Manual Antonio. We really enjoyed Bijagual and Ronny's Mi Lugar (both just past El Mono Azul). Both are outdoors, and Ronny's has a spectacular view and incredibly welcoming staff! El Mono Azul also is home to "Kids Saving The Rainforest" - its a small shop along with (I think) ecology programs that kids can sign up for

Thanks to both of you for replying...
Stopping in Rio Tarcoles seems like a good idea - told my kids who loved it. Seems like there's some kind of crocs there, if they're after after your car ;=)
Thanks again -nathan

Through San Ramon is the quickest route. Once you reach the Interamerican you can either:
1. turn west on it, drive to Puntarenas, the south to Quepos/MA, OR
2. turn east on it toward San Jose and backtrack a very short distance to the Atenas exit, where you can cut back toward the southwest through Atenas and Orotina, then south to Quepos/MA.
#2 provides the more scenic drive, IMO. And is perhaps a little quicker.
To take the other route out of Arenal works as well; but would, I believe, add a little time due to the condition of the road around the lake. Driving around the lake is interesting, however, if you've not done it before. Perhaps while you are at Arenal, you could explore on this road for some distance just to get a look at the lake.

Nathan,
I have the same itineray as you and have three children 7, 9 and 11. I'm trying to touch base so that I can get your tips and feedback upon return. When in February do you go. Please email me at home if you get this post.
[email protected] thanks
