differences between Isla Mujeres & Playa del Carmen -- compare?
Hi all,
I'm thinking of going to PDC this summer, and since I've to Cancun and Isla but not PDC, I wonder if you could compare.
A lot of people like Isla, but I didn't see the charm...and I do like authentic Mexican towns...

I've been to Cancun once, would not care to go back. I've been to Playa del Carmen twice and enjoy the area. Also been to Isla once, and prefer it to both the above.
Playa del Carmen is definitely more developed than Isla. Are you thinking of staying in town or one of the resorts south of town?
What was it that you didn't care for on Isla? We stayed on the Caribbean side and I loved falling asleep to the sound of the surf every night.

Thanks for replying! I don't know what it was about Isla, I found it fine for a day trip, but wouldn't want to stay for a longer time.
I didn't feel a very "friendly" vibe I guess, and I hate to say this... I thought it was a little trashy...sorry!

I'm a big fan and return visitor to Puerto Vallarta. I look forward to getting myself to Playa del Carmen sometime soon since people who like one, most often like both. I know that's not exactly an answer, but for what it's worth. I really like a *town* to kick around in so I don't think Isla would rock my boat either.

Frankie, I think you'll enjoy Playa del Carmen. It's quite a bit larger and more upscale (although it still isn't fancy). Lots of fun bars and restaurants. Cozumel is fairly close by as well. Jean

Thanks, I too really liked Puerto Vallarta, and the little town of Sayulita...so I think PDC will be great.
Really appreciate your kind advice. I"m buying the airline tix right now!

I like the beaches in Playa, and there are still some cool places there, but it's really getting too big, too busy, and too commercial these days.
Isla Mujeres is *much* more laid back, IMHO, and *far* more friendly -- especially towards the end of the day, as the hordes of daytrippers get back on the boat to Cancun. Isla is quieter. Has more mom & pop places.
I've been to both. Both are cool. But personally, I much prefer Isla...
