My husband to be is a HUGE fan of cigars and knows that he can get his hands on some Cuban cigars while in Cancun.

Anyone have any suggestions about which stores/where to go to purchase these?

You can buy them anywhere...at hotels, at the airport...but expect to pay more. Try to find find Cohibas. It IS illegal to bring them back to the US though....

belle is right. They are all over the place and easy to find beginning with your arrival at the airport in Cancun, or you can easily find them at the malls in the Zona Hotelera once you get to your hotel.

...and don't EVEN think of trying to bring any left over ones into the US.

You will very likely get detained and have all of your luggage hand searched. Imm. officials take a very dim view of people trying to bring them back and are on the lookout for them.

As I understand it, there are also a lot of 'fake' Cuban cigars for sale. Make sure and buy from a reputable store. Of course, I have no idea which ones those are.

Customs does seem obsessed with Cuban cigars. They don't seem to have their eyes tuned in for Cuban rum though. We've bought numerous bottles of Havana Club home, no one has ever stopped us.

And when we actually came back from Cuba, they must have figured there wasn't anything there worth smuggling because they diverted us around customs and out the front door of the airport. Go figure. (From there, we could legally bring back $100.00 worth of Cuban cigars.)

I thought I'd read sometime back where customs was allowing / tolerating what would be deemed personal consumation amounts of Cuban cigars. IMHO, I wouldn't sweat bringing 5 or less back.

The US treasury dept frowns on anyone bringing them back into the US for any reason. The only way you can is if you happen to have an official reason to be there. I have a neighbor who married a beautiful cuban woman. She can return to the contry to visit family and brings back $100 worth for "their consumption". They offer them to me when I go there for dinner and have advised me against trying to bring them back into the country from Mexico. On the othe hand, I bought some that were hand rolled without bands last time I went there and did not have a problem bringing them back.

I wouldn't want to risk bringing them back. I recently saw them taken by US Customs -- and you could be fined.
