Just a post to anyone thinking of taking aboard any carry on liquid souvenirs of i.e. Vanilla or Tequila. Those items will be confiscated by Mexican authorities. They now impose a three oz limit on any fluids in your carry on luggage that was not purchased at the tax free store inside security in the airport. We had to give up a really nice bottle of Anise Tequila.

I just came through the cancun airport on friday. I had bought a small bottle of water at a kiosk right beside my gate. When I went to board they took it away from me, so I had to get on the plane w/ no water.

Not as precious perhaps as a bottle of Tequila, but still....since I had bought it after security...I was surprised.

All they are doing is matching the US rules that have been in place for ages now. It's simple: when you fly from anywhere to the U.S., check all liquids over 3 ounces. If you can't check it, don't buy it.

No, it's not the same as in the US. The US has long since relaxed its rules, if you buy sodas/water after you get through security, you can take those items on the plane.

In Cancun, you can't carry anything to drink on with you.

The other thing about this that I've seen trip people up on their flight home: They buy a bottle of liquor in the airport shop that's past security and can carry it aboard the plane with them for their flight to the United States. They go through immigration and customs upon arrival in the U.S., but then they might be connecting to another flight. At that point, they have to pack that bottle in their checked luggage because security at U.S. airports will not allow anything over 3 ounces to pass through.

JeanH is right about Mexico. Countrywide they enthusiastically sell you beverages in the secured area then confiscate them as you get on the plane. The exception being duty free, then you face the problem of not being able to carry it on in the U.S. The upside- I made a Delta gate agent really happy when I gave her a bottle of Bordeaux which I was allowed to carry on in France, but not in the U.S.
