Corcovado from Bosque del Cabo
I will be staying at Bosque del Cabo for 6 days later this month, and would like to do a tour to Corcovado. According to Bosque's website, they will arrange a guide for the day. You drive to Carate and hike in along the beach. Do many of the guests at Bosque do this trip? Can anyone tell me if it is worth it? Because of the cost, I would hope to be able to do it with several other guests. I've read that there is as much wildlife around Bosque as there is in the park, but since I will be there for 6 days, I wouldn't mind seeing another area.
I did get to hike some of the trails near the San Pedrillo ranger station in the park last year while staying at Casa Corcovado.

We just returned from Bosque and as far as I know no one went to Corcovado that week. The ride from Puerto Jimenez to Bosque alone is enough to deter a lot of people- it isn't an easy road. One of the guides at Bosque said it was harder to see wildlife in Corcovado now because the animals were avoiding humans more because of the poachers in the park. It looks like a long trip for a lot of money and there may not be a lot of wildlife. We had plenty to do at Bosque for the six days.

Cabo Matapalo where Bosque del Cabo is is a very unique area. You will most likely see as much if not more there as far as wildlife and birds go.
I have spent a good bit of time in Carate and Bosque del Cabo and much prefer the wildlife and hiking in Bosque. I have not seen very many people go into Corcovado from there. The one time we went into the park from the La Leona entrance we were very disappointed. The trails were almost non existent and we saw very little. We ended up turning around and walking back out after a couple of hours.
For about the same price, I suspect, I would take a day trip into Puerto Jimenez and go on one of the kayak tours. Lots of fun. Last time we did that we had dolphins swimming around us. High tide was around 3pm and the dolphins were following the fishing boats in. If high tide is late enough you might be able to combine it with the sunset kayaking. After seeing the sunset you eat dinner in Puerto Jimenez. (food is better at Bosque but it is a change of pace if you will be there for 6 days).

There is a tour you can arrange through vacationcity.com that will fly you into the park, and you stay overnite in the Rangers cabins. They will take you out at night to see all the animals. and from the pictures I've seen, it is amazing, as all the cats and wildlife etc come out at night. You might want to find someone at Bosque to share the expense of the flight, probably. I want to say you fly to Serena, but I can't quite remember. We wish we had planned that, but, once we got to Bosque, we got so lazy, we just took advantage of all the fun there. Pura Vida there is very intoxicating!!!

For less money and more adventure you can hop the Collectivo to Carate from the main road for about $5 a person to the end of the road in Carate. It may be a 4x4 taxi or a truck with board seats in the back and bars overhead and on the sides to hold onto. The wife and I did that from Cabo Matapalo on the open truck seats in back and ofcourse we loved the open wild ride. I would suggest a guide for in the park though. We didn't go as far as the park as it was too hot for the wife to walk in !!! Heard from another who went in with a guide and he saw tapir and about twenty peccary. The Cabo area does have alot of wildlife though and I liked Backwash Bay for swimming. The lad at Carate's store said one could hop a flight from there into Sierena for the day for $135 total for up to 6 people.

Also you can rent a surfboard at Pan Dulce and give it a go. I got my first ride there renting a board from Brian at Encanta La Vida for $15 a day. The Pan Dulce beach is all grapefruit size rocks but you go out farther to catch the waves. The surfing is beast when the tide is out.

Just about any hotel in Puerto Jimenez/Carate can help you set up a guide and/or a flight into the park. There is an air taxi that operates just in that area of the country. What is frequently done is that people will stay at a hotel/lodge and then fly into Sirena taking only the stuff they will absolutely need. From there they hike out possibly after spending a night. It is a full days hike to Carate from Sirena and I have seen some people with some pretty good blisters.
For just a day trip with a guide I am sure the hotel/lodge would pack you a box lunch to take. From the end of the road in Carate to the entrance of the park it is about 1hr or so on a very hot beach after about an hour of bouncing on the road to get to Carate from Bosque del Cabo. We did find a trail just off the beach that was a little cooler.

I just spent 5 nights at Bosque del Cabo and did not speak with any one who took a trip to Corcavado. I stayed at Casa Corcavado last year and found the hiking and wildlife better at Bosque. In fact, the wildlife came to me. What a great place.
