Cancun - snorkeling excursions, advice please!
Hello. I will be traveling to Cancun in three weeks (yeah!) and need some advice on snorkeling excursions. I?ve read some about the Jungle Tour and that looks great with the jet ski's/speed boat. Has anyone had recent experience with this tour? I am looking for a ? day trip (9am-2pm or 10am-3pm?that type of thing). There are two of us and we both really enjoy great snorkeling and are both good swimmers. Also, what is the price I can expect to pay for something like this? Thank you.

We have twice done a trip called Snokeling Adventure departing from Pat O'Briens around 9:30 and returning around 4pm. The destination is a private beach just south of Puerto Morelos, 25 minutes, and the snorkeling near the reef is very good.
In addition, the beach is beautiful, the food is tremendous and the tour leader Jean-Marc aka Juan is a hoot. The tequila shack is also fun! Snorkeling with the jungle tour is not the best. Another good option is the ferry to and from Isla Mujeres and to be on your own time frame.

We snorkeled at a few places but I enjoyed Xelha the most. It's a park geared to families but we saw a lot of underwater sea life, and got to visit the ruins in nearby Tulum (really neat!). We did engage a tour, but you could also rent a car and drive there yourself.
Many people recommended the town of Akumal as the best snorkeling in the area - a do it yourself destination near Tulum. You can rent equipment there from beach vendors.
My brother-in-law scubas in Cozumel - and claims its the best there is. But I don't know any vendors and it is a really long ride by boat from Cancun. Would require an overnight stay.
Other posts mentioned snorkeling and the "Booze Cruise" from O'Briens to Isla Mejueres. It's really fun and inexpensive. Also, there were lots of locals which is even more interesting.
A word of caution about scuba - the 2-3 hour training in Mexico is probably okay, but falls far short of what is required in the US. Check reputable travel guides to find good companies. I mean just thinks about it for a minute... What if something goes wrong 20 feet under water.....
Don't you want to be prepared to handle that?
Have fun!!
