Bosque Del Cabo questions

Hello everyone,

I've been reading many many good things about Bosque Del Cabo and decided (almost) that's where myself and my fiancee are going on our honeymoon. I have a few questions before I make that decision that hopefully someone will be able to help answer.

1) My Fiancee has cerebral palsy which basically cuts off any communication to her brain regarding balance. Therefore she has to walk with crutches to help stabilize herself. She thinks she'll be able to get around fairly easy there because the land looks level, not too many steps, and not a whole lot of walking (not including hikes). Are these assumptions true? Any pictures or descriptions of different areas would be helpful.

2) We emailed the lodge and got the reservation form back in our email. However, has anyone booked their Bosque del Cabo trip through a travel agent? And if so, is it worth it? Can you get better deals, etc.?

Thanks again for all the great information in this board as it has made our decision that much simpler.

As for booking thru a TA, I honestly can't see any reason to. You'll get better info right here at Fodors tahn a TA that has never even heard of it. Unless you're booking for a group I don't think BdC offers any real discounts. Their form is very easy to use & you can just fax it back and then mail your deposit.

I can't say 100% about getting around the lodge area as I haven't had to do that, but thinking about the walk from the cabinas to the restaurant/bar/pool area should be okay. You may want to ask for a cabina closer to the lodge area. This link has many pics of the BdC grounds to maybe give you an idea, let me know if the link doesn't work and I could e-mail you an invitation instead. http://www.kodakgallery.com/AlbumMen...vfolderid=2005

It truly is a wonderful place and I must say that many of my animal spottings were done right from my cabina, plus one day when a huge troop of capuchins took over a tree behind the pool.

Thanks for the reply.

The main reason I was curious about a TA is negotiating cheaper airfare. Flying from Michigan to Costa Rica seems to be an expensive trip and wherever possible I'd love to use my 65000 frequent flyer miles. So in that regards have you or anyone else had good experiences going through a travel agent?

Also, the link did not show any pictures. I think it has to be an invitation unfortunately. My account there is under [email protected]

Thanks,

Derek Lewis

Well my last use of a TA was in 1991 so I'm no use there, I don't know if they can get you cheaper air or not, couldn't hurt to try! I've also found IRA software to be very useful to see all kinds of flights - but not using FF miles. http://matrix.itasoftware.com/cvg/dispatch/

I will send you an invite in a moment.

Hi- We just booked at Bosque del cabo for a week and we went through the resort itself. I read your other post about reserving. The reservation methods seem a little "old fashion", but too many good reviews made us look beyond that.
Leonardo has been wonderful with helping us. We have been exchanging emails and talked to him once by phone,(they have no toll-free number) Have you addressed your concerns with him? I'm sure he would be very helpful.
Which airline do you have frequent flier miles with? We are flying out of Chicago Ohare and found us airways to have the best deal for February dates.

I have addressed some concerns with the accessability of the area for my fiancee with Leonardo and Kim. They have been very helpful to further cement my decision to go there. However, I just wanted to get other visitors feelings on that subject to make myself and my fiancee feel more comfortable with the lodge. Regarding the old fashioned style of doing business, after talking with people on here I've looked past that minor inconvenience and will book this trip as soon as possible.

I have frequent flyer miles with Northwest unfortunately. Detroit is a northwest hub so I travel extensively for work with them. They seem to have the most expensive flights to Costa Rica but I may be able to offset that with mileage. Looking on orbitz I found the cheapest flight was through US Airways as well. I may end up going that route and saving my miles for a domestic trip.

Thanks everyone for such great information by the way.

If your fiance can get around on crutches she should be okay on the grounds. I am sure that Kim/Leo will make sure you have a cabina that is directly in front of the dining room, pool, bar. It is still far enough for privacy and will have beautiful views of the ocean. My only concern would be her getting on and off those little planes. How does she do on stairs?

My husband is in CR now with his Dad who had a stroke last year. They flew down to Puerto Jimenez to do some fishing (try to anyway) as it has always been his Dad's first love and my husband wanted to do one last fishing trip with him. My husband's biggest worry was him getting on and off those planes because his Dad has little use of his right arm and his left leg drags. There is no ramp to get directly on the plane like there is with a big one. He did fine on the way down so I am assuming they will do okay on the way back on Saturday. The people on the airline were very helpful.

There is someone going to Lapa Rios who booked through one of those on line travel companies like Orbitz (I forget which one exactly). She ended up paying more for her room than if she had booked directly with the Lodge.

Here are some pictures of some of the different cabinas. If you look a little further into my travelogues there is place with a few more pictures of Bosque.

She actually does pretty well on stairs considering. Do those little plans have a railing to hold on to to get into the plane? If so she should have no problem. Sometimes without a railing it is a little difficult for her but she is very persistent and determined (one of my favorite qualities about her).

We actually requested the Mariposa cabina because I've heard it is a great spot for honeymooners with the tub outside. As long as it's not a mile long walk to that cabina I think she'll be ok with it.

Mariposa isn't too far. None of the cabinas are except for the ones in the garden area. It is a larger cabina as well. We have seen all kinds of wildlife from there. There are lights on the trails but they aren't very bright so be sure to bring a couple of headlamps or flashlights for walking back after dinner. They do have some at the lodge if you foreget.

Obviously the tiny planes don't have stairs and rails but I am pretty sure the larger ones (18 seaters) that go down to Puerto Jimenez do have them. I have been on them so many times now that I don't even notice. My husband will be back tomorrow and I will ask him how his dad made out on them. I know they made it down fine. They did have a wheelchair waiting for his dad to get around in the SJO airport on arrival because it is pretty big.

If I remember correctly, they rails are not solid, they are more like a thin chain or rope with some plastic/pvc around them. I'm thinking maybe 4 or 5 steps up? Also, they planes are so small that you have to bend at the waist to get to your seat. But there are seats right by the exit so I would ask them to reserve those for you.

Hey Everyone,

One more question I was curious about. We're planning this trip from July 9th to the 13th (thereabouts). I keep reading online how much it rains during this time. I'm just curious how many people have been there during this time and how much it actually does rain? I don't really want to spend my honeymoon stuck inside all day because it's raining all the time. Thanks for all the answers to my neverending list of questions everyone

Take care,

Derek Lewis

Bariman,
Hubby just got home yesterday. They just breezed through customs/immigration in minutes with his dad in a wheelchair. Something for you to think about. It can be a hike to immigration and then the line can take forever sometimes, othertimes not too bad. Depends on how many flights get in at the same time.

The stairs to get on the smaller plane have heavy, very tight cable covered with plastic. My father in law made it up and down just fine so your sweetie should too.

My husband has been to Bosque during July a couple of times and the weather was fine. There will be a chance of rain but mostly in the afternoon or evening.

Swim,
Good job! Our ff's are almost used up so I hope we can get some good deals too. Good to know there is hope.

We were there during the first week of July a couple of years ago. Weather was great. It rained during most nights, but seldom during the day, even in the afternoon. Those little typical afternoon showers, should they occur, don't hamper activities much. The mornings are typcially clear and beautiful. Have a great time!
