Are the La Paz Waterfall Gardens "on the way" from SJO to Arenal?

We will be arriving at SJO in the late afternoon and will spend the first night at the Hampton Inn near the airport. We will be spending the next 4 nights at the Lost Iguana in the Arenal area.

If we leave bright and early in the morning, we will arrive at the LI before check in time...so I was thinking of a side trip to La Paz for a bit of hiking. Is La Paz on the way to Arenal?

Anybody have any better ideas for side trips?

I think La Paz waterfall gardens would be a nice morning jaunt for you. It's about an hour or so to get there, and you can easily spend the rest of the morning wandering around the gardens and checking out the waterfalls. We left there around 1 p.m. and were in the Arenal area by 4:00.

La Paz was one of our favorite places in all of Costa Rica. The combination of the wonderful waterfall walks, the butterfly pavillion and the unbelievable hummingbird garden was absolutely awesome. NTBM

We also stopped at La Paz on the way from SJO to Arenal. We got out of the airport around 9:30 am, stopped at LaPaz and toured the waterfalls and gardens. We also had lunch there and continued on to Arenal. It is a very nice stop.

We had a driver, so I can't help you with directions. However, he also offered to stop at Grecia and Sarchi for shopping as an alternative to stopping at La Paz.

Missypie. When are you leaving for CR. Are you hiring a driver, If so are you going to ask him to stop and then do you pay extra. We have already prepaid all our hotels and transfers...but I think that stopping at La Paz would be a great thing to do before we get to Lost Iguana

We will be renting a car, so we can really stop wherever we want, as long as we get to the LI before dark.

Stopping at La Paz on the way to Arenal sounds fun, but we will have all our luggage in the rental SUV. Does La Paz have a secure parking lot with security guards or large lockers or some other place to check in your luggage while exploring the grounds?

Does anyone know the enterence fee to Lapaz? Traveling with party of 9 on the highlight tour and considering doing it on our own with a driver instead. Thanks

On www.arenal.net click on "map", and on the right hand side there's a box for a map from Arenal to San Jose. It shows 3 different routes between Arenal and San Jose, with driving times and sights along the way.
