a good hotel near the SJ airport for first night.

Can anyone suggest a good hotel in the moderate price range to spend our first and probably last night in CR?

Pura Vida Hotel! First-rate relatively inexpensive hotel--beautiful gardens, welcoming staff, comfortable cabinitas etc. (10 min. from airport)

Stayed two nights at Villa Bonita (arriving and departing) and very happy with the cleaniness and friendliness of the owners (Humberto and Carmine). For around $50.00, you also get a REALLY good breakfast (try the gallo pinto!!!)
They can be reached at www.hotelvillabonita.com

I second the vote for hotel Brilla Sol. We stayed there last March and were very happy with the service and cleanliness. Pay with traveller's cheques or cash to avoid credit card surcharge.

We just returned from CR and would recommend Las Orquideas in Alajuela. This is a charming hotel just outside the city. It is located only about 20 minutes from the airport and they will arrange for a shuttle pick up and return. As an extra bonus...food is great!!!! We thought it was the perfect way to begin and end our vacation!

If you choose Orquideas stay in the Deluxe rooms. Well worth the extra $10 more than the Garden Rooms. Much more room all around and more restful decor than the Garden and Roadside. Can even get flow through ventilation with the windows on each ends of the room. Has a view also with backdoor seating by the sliding door.
The restaurant is nice with good food and ambience. The breakfast is OK but not up to the raves I've read here. I must be spoiled from other CR breakfasts. The wife and I thought the coffee was bitter also, making it an unpleasant drink. Be prepared for road noise as it is next to a busy road which was it's biggest drawback for me. I crave quite. I'd stil consider returning as it is a pleasast Inn. An alternative with quite is the Hotel Buena Vista around the same price but in a quite hillside setting much easier to find than Orquideas if you are driving. Don't have experience with dinner there.

sandyc..What did you like about the Corteza? It was one that was recommended by the Tortequero Lodge that we are staying at. Is there a shuttle?

Depeinding on what tiem you are arriving, the Hampton Inn is perfect. They pick you up and it is about 5 minutes from the airport. American style rooms, internet access, breakfast, etc. If you've had a long flight and/or it is late, it eases you into the country perfectly.
