I would definitely recommend reservations if you care at all about accomodations. All the best places have been booking up even through the rainy season. All of the places you've mentioned are great destinations and most hotels are very small in Costa Rica.

I posted the same question recently about our honeymoon in May. Someone replied that Costa Verde in Manual Antonio was entirely booked for the last week of May. So... if you have your heart set on a certain place, make reservations.

Hello,
I made a front desk friend in the hotel that i stayed at in Manual Antonio and she told me in most cases if you book over the Internet you get a better rate than just dropping in... I got my room for 1/3 less than the folks in the room next door because I booked mine before I went
Manual Antonio hotel:

It was quite, clean, secure has a pool, is in the jungle and runs up the hill. Can walk to Quepos in 15 minutes. Local bus every 1/2 to the beach cost 35 cents. Staff is great! View from the lookout is something to see
Puerto Viejo tons of places to stay, I was at http://www.cashewhilllodge.co.cr/
Family run, very nice cost of $20.00 per night.. Rented a bike and that was transportation for my stay 40km of pretty flat roads and a million beaches with no one on them..
Have a great time! Wish I was there

We are also going in May - to Arenal, Monteverde and Tambor. Several of my "first choice" places were already full, at least with the type room I needed. I thought it would not be difficult to find a place during "green season" but I wish I had made reservations online sooner!
