Zurich 2 spare days
We finish a tour of Switzerland and have two free days before we fly home to Australia. I would love some ideas. Our tour is a 10 day train one. Happy to rent a car for the two days.

Hi RebeccaHWA,
No need to rent a car -- places you may want to go from Zürich will be easier to get to by train/boat.
What time of year is this?
I would suggest going down to the sweet town of Rapperswil on Lake Zurich; it has a castle on a hill, a nice old town, a cafe-lined harbor, and a deer park. If it's summertime, you can go one direction on the train and the other by boat. I doubt your tour will have taken you there!
If your tour doesn't take you to Basel, the city is definitely worth a day. You can stroll the old town, hop across the Rhine on one of the current-driven ferries, and walk along the Rhine.
I doubt your tour will take you to Zug, which is also a great day-trip (though I haven't been there myself yet).
I know your tour will take you to Luzern, but it's a wonderful place, so you may want to go there again. Spend more time in the old town, take another ferry ride on the lake, or ascend another of the peaks that you missed the first time.
Hope this gets you started!

Can I suggest a day trip to Pilatus if you have not already been? We did this from Zurich- purchased an all in one fare from railway station. We trained to Luzerne (1 hour) joined a ferry cruise on Lake Luzerne, approximately 1.5hrs, then took the very steep cograilway to Mt. Pilatus. At the top there are walking trails & a couple of restaurants for lunch on the sun deck. Great views of the mountains. From memory our day trip ticket had a SF 10-15 credit for lunch. On return we took a cable car, then caught a bus at the base to return to Luzern. All in all a wonderful, varied day. From memory it was something like A$100 & well worth it.

Hi thank you for replies. We are doing a Trafalgar train tour which includes * Zurich: Orientation tour of this lakeside city.
* St. Moritz: Orientation of this mountain resort.
* Zermatt: Orientation of this car-free mountain resort.
* Geneva: Orientation including the United Nations building, the Reformation Monument, the Flower Clock and the Jet D’Eau.
* Interlaken: Stop in this beautiful resort renowned for its views of the Jungfrau.
* Lucerne: Orientation tour including the Lion Monument and Chapel Bridge.
It is all by train and includes the glacier express. We have been to Lucerne before. We are fit healthy people in our fifties who want to see different things than in Australia. The small villages etc rather than shopping. This is the end of our holidays which includes Greece, Holland, France and then Switzerland.
