Intra-Switzerland travel

My husband and I are staying in Zurich for 6 days on free hotel "points" he accumulated on business travel. We have to stay there six consecutive days. We then have three 'free' days afterwards for travel within the country, but have to be back in Zurich to fly home. I want to know if anyone has a reasonable DAY TRIP idea or two from Zurich. Lucerne is my thought. What else is close enough for a short day trip? Also, for our three free days, is Interlacken a good pick?

You could visit the Rhein Falls in Schaffhausen, go up to the Uetliberg for an excellent view of the city, the lake and the distant Alps as well as maybe go lakeside and enjoy the gardens in Rapperswil.

Plenty to do really! The SBB Office would have more information on this.

Sue, once in Zurich, go to the Tourist Office in the main hall of the train station. There, you will find not only suggestions about what to do in Zurich itself, but also tons of material about Switzerland.
Next to the above suggestions, don't miss a cruise on the Lake, either Zurich or Lucerne.
A lot really depends of your personal interests. A trip just to Interlaken is not a very good idea, rather go further up to any of the places in the Bernese Oberland such as Grindelwald, Wengen or Muerren.
Have a nice trip!

Hi. Regensberg is a pretty little place high on a hill. And don't forget Stein am Rhine with its interesting painted buildings -- and also Schaffhausen! So many places within easy reach!

Would suggest a day trip to either Bern or Basel - both are only about 1hr. train ride from Zurich and have their "charms" - Basel esp. museums, Bern a really old town surrounded by the Aare river. Luzern is always an idea but it may seem similar to Zurich (lake; an old town; some modern architecture mixed with the old)... Now, for your 3 free days, would only do Interlacken if you are considering it as a base for day trips. Otherwise, head up into the REAL alpine world to places like Wengen (no cars; also, stay at the Hotel Caprice and ask for a room with a Jungfraublick/view to the Jungfrau), which is just a short distance from Interlaken; or, don't forget the eastern "Graubunden" area which is basically 2-3 hrs. by train from train from Zurich - any of the following resorts: Flims, Lenzerheide, Pontresina, Arosa, Davos or Klosters will put you in hiking and panorma heaven. Was in Flims this past weekend - can recommend the Hotel Adula, is nearby to various walks and hikes; easy access to gondola and chair lifts; great fitness/wellness center for a rainy day if you get one.
