Zagreb--Split--Dubrovnik in MARCH
hi everyone, i recently found this site, and its been great!
i am currently trying to plan my croatia adventure from amsterdam, and i was hoping to get some advice.
first of all, my tentative plan is a RT from amsterdam to zagreb. . . and then i wanted to go to split and dubrovnik, all in approx. 7 days. is this too ambitious for the amount of area i need to cover. i have figured out that i can catch a flight from dubrovnik back up to zagreb to catch the return of my RT flight, but travelling b/w zagreb and split is where i think i might lose time. . . . is it better to just fly b/w zagreb and split? or take the 9hr?? train.
or should i just skip split all together?
any advice is greatly appreciated.
aloha!

Hi Lahi,
I would just skip Split. With only 7 days, I would concentrate on Plivitce, and Dubrovnik, as well as one of the islands. Hvar has been getting lots of attention here lately. We are headed to Korcula via Split in about 3 weeks and I can let you know what we think.
Cheers,
Jan

Split was interesting for an afternoon but I would not necessarily go out of my way to get there.
I would go to Dubrovnik from Zagreb, take a couple of day trips; to Montenegro and maybe the wine tour through Peljesac Peninsula.
Or to Hvar if you're more the "beach" type. There are hundreds of virtually uninhabited islands around Hvar to keep you busy for a few days.
Take it easy. Don't blow through your vacation running from place to place!
One day and night in Zagreb is enough I think too.

thank you everyone for your responses. . . i didnt see them at first, i was looking in the wrong place.
jan, i would love to hear how your trip turns out.
as ive started to do more planning, i am more than ready to knock off some destinations. my only concern is that i will be there during "off" season--march.
does everyone suggest flying from zagreb to dubrovnik?! im assuming thats a definite yes.
carta your idea is great. are the airports in croatia fairly easy to get in and out of?

"Does everyone suggest flying from Zagreb to Dubrovnik?" Be aware that flying into Dubrovnik can be challenging at certain seasons of the year and that planes are sometimes diverted to Split and passengers bussed to Dubrovnik. You might skip the adventure and plan to visit Split on the way to Dubrovnik by bus or car if you plan to go to both places anyway. Anyway, Croatians I have met suggest buying full fare tickets from Zagreb to Dubrovnik so you can cancel without penalty if the weather is bad.

ok. so my travel partner just told me that she is convinced that we should call off our trip b.c she spoke to someone from Croatia, and his advice was that everything is closed in March, and it would just be a waste to go????!!!!! help!! i was so set on going, even though its off season.
any thoughts?

Bummer!
I find that hard to believe about everything being closed. The country relies too much on tourism for them to confine it to a certain time of year. In Zagreb and Dubrovnik you can certainly get hotels and restaurants are open. Zagreb has museums o'plenty and is a big convention town. I doubt they close entirely.
Some ferry schedules are down for and it would be too cold to swim, but what exactly are you going to be doing? I bet you can still sit around in great restaurants and pubs hanging out with Croatians. As a whole, I found Croatians to be some of the friendliest and most sociable people anywhere. You might actually get to have a different kind of experience than when all the tourists are there.
Have you actually checked?

yeah i might cry over this one. . . croatia postponed. its really up to my friend at this point, i have done tons of homework, found all of the flights, train schedules, and even accomodations (per recommendations on this site) to stay at in dubrovnik.
apparently she is convinced that croatia is best in summer months, and there is nothing to do the rest of the year! i think its bogus, im from hawaii, and you could say the best time to come is in the summer, but that doesnt mean that it isnt a great place to be oustide of the summer months.
oh well. croatia will be in my future. if anyone wants to go to croatia sometime in 2007. let me know!!
as for my march trip, its going to be rome possibly . . .i still have my ticket to a'dam.
thanks everyone for your replies.
