York and Lake Country Hotels

My partner and I are going to be escorting my Mother (late 60's) to the UK in the spring. Can anyone offer suggestions for nice, but not super expensive, hotels in York (City Centre) and the Windermere area? I think my Mother would prefer a hotel to a B&B, unless the B&B is nice with good en suite facilities.

Thanks, Peabody

We had a lovely stay in May 2003 at:

Fair Rigg Guest House
Ferry View
Bowness on Windermere
Cumbria LA23 3JB
Phone 44 (0) 1539 443941
See on www.smoothhound.co.uk
or www.south-lakes.org.uk

This is a beautiful guest house with spacious bathrooms. Ours had a full bath and shower. Fresh towels and face cloths provided daily. Room comes with a hospitality tray, very nice first thing in the morning or last thing at night. Full breakfast is included. See review on www.tripadvisor.com. We have stayed at many B&B's in the UK and this is one of the best.

Best wishes for a lovely holiday.

Thanks for the information. Miller Howe looks wonderful! It's not that expensive considering it includes wonderful 4 course dinners.

The Four Season in York looks nice also, but is totally non-smoking. My mother isn't. Does anyone have an opinion of St. Denys Hotel or Lady Anne Middleton's in York or know of any other York hotels that permit smoking?

Thanks, Peabody.

I just recently stayed for one night at Lady Anne Middletons. It is a small hotel, not fancy but it was clean and they included a full breakfast. I stayed in a single room and the price was very reasonable. While not large it was larger than some of the hotel rooms that I stayed at in London for a single and it was comfortable. My room was a non smoking so I assume that there are smoking rooms. I had arrived at 10:30 a.m. from Edinburgh and hoped they would just keep my luggage till the room was ready. I got a look from one of the receptionists that it seemed unheard of that I wanted to check in so early. Then she said I could leave my luggage at my own peril. Then when I questioned her that I would have to worry about it, within 5 minutes my room seemed to be ready and my luggage was brought up. Very strange it was. However, the room was ensuite and it was within walking distance to town, about 10 minutes to the Shambles part. I even walked there from the Rail station. Lots of shops in town and I had a very nice tea at Betty's and a good lunch at Plunketts. Enjoy your stay!
