I just did a radio interview talking about the prevalence of fast food for kids and their lack of exercise. Once a month is not bad. I went to a place like a McDonals once a month when I was a kid, and it WAS a treat. Today, however, it is such a quick fix for a parent to take their kids to fast food joints multiple times in a week. I don't blame McDonalds. I blame the parents. Obesity is an epidemic in this country that will not change until people start changing their eating habits and especially the habits of their kids. I will confess, though, that occasionally I do get a craving for an In 'n Out Burger. I just don't make it a habit.

When I take the kids to McD's (or Taco Bell or Burger King or wherever) we always counter-balance it w/ some sort of activity like going to the park or going roller blading or swimming or whatever. <BR><BR>I must admit, however, it's a treat for me, too. I'm not a HUGE fan of McDs, but I do get cravings for the fries! I DO give into my cravings however! I just run an extra half-mile or so the next day! Ha-ha!

During a 10 day visit to Germany and France back in 2000, my wife and I would stop at McDonalds in Germany for cold (iced) coca colas. The McDonalds had drive thrus - called McDrive. When we asked for the cokes, they were given to us with no ice. We asked for ice - they looked shocked (why would we dilute the beverage?) It was fun. But they don't understand the slang "to go". They used "take away". When we were there, mad cow was all over Europe and they were serving pork sausage sandwiches called "McFarmer".<BR><BR>In Strasbourg, France, we arrived late and the only restaurant still open was a McDonalds were I ate a Croque McDoo (grilled ham and cheese sandwich - from the Croque Monsieur sandwich). The teenagers working there were very nice and liked to practice their English.

I have never eaten McD's in Europe...too many other wonderful choices to pick McD's. I did however have wild cravings for it after a bout of food poisoning in the Caribbean. All I wanted was junk food!

When we were in Lucca, Italy last month, there were no restaurants (other than some coffee bars) open in the mid-afternoon and we hadn't eaten lunch yet. After about a mile or so of walking and "looking" for a place, we finally came up on a McDonald's near the autostrada. As an American, we see McD's everywhere in the States; however, my boyfriend (who is Italian and from Liguria region) had never been to one before. I agreed to eat there and was most pleasantly surprised. There were a lot of items on the menu that expanded on the traditional offerings in the States. We ordered 2 chicken sandwiches and they came on delicious crusted bread like any panini you would buy in a ristorante. They were good - we actually enjoyed it! I was relieved that it turned out to be decent and it explained why there were so many Italians eating there. Bravo McDonalds - Italian style!

The nice thing about McD's throughout the world is you can almost always count on being able to use the loo without a dragon lady and without any of this nonsensical toilets for customers only. There are some exceptions I have found, especially in Paris but for the most part they can be a welcome sight for somebody who has to go.

I ate several times at the IP Pavlova McDonalds in Prague last summer, as well as the one in the Flora Mall. They have great take out coffee, and quick late night snacks. Sometimes you want the convenience of food served immediately, instead of lingering at a cafe for an hour, while they take their time preparing & serving your meal. Plus, the McDonalds in Europe will "serve" you your order, if they have to prepare it in the back. When I ordered a McGreek, they would always tell me to take a seat, and then they would cheerfully carry it to me when it was ready. I don't see anything wrong with frequenting an establishment that has its act together, and the McDonalds overseas are more pleasant than the ones that I (rarely) go to in NJ!

McDonald's are not built solely for the comfort of American tourists. In many trips to Switzerland, at 2 different McD locations, I notice the patrons were pretty much all local folks (best as I could tell).

My 2 boys(age 5 &6 now) love to go to Mcdonalds when we travel and we've been to Mcdonalds in Japan, Hong Kong, Germany, France, Belgium and Switzerland and they loved to order their beloved Happy Meals. Mcdonalds outside of US always have better toys, for some reason. They usually run a totally different promotion than what's in the US at the same time and instead buying them toys, we just took them to Mcdonalds as a treat for being good during the trip like sitting with us for 3 hours at a formal restaurant....
