Elephant Island, off the coast of Antarctica. Last toured by Ernest Shackleton in 1916.

I'd nominate Interstate 5 running from Sacramento to Los Angeles: miles and miles and miles of nothing but boring landscape. It's so bad that you get excited at the occasional sign.

You have to be daft beyond all imagination to think that Paris is the worst place on earth! DAFT! As mad as Ophelia!! Paris is GLORIOUS! Some of you are too sensitive. Why on earth would you disparage a beautiful city because someone was rude to you? "Oh, never mind the Louvre, someone cut in front of us in the queue at the boulangerie, and that ruined everything for us. We will NEVER go back." Daft.

No place any of us are likely to go on a tourist trip is going to be the worst place on earth.

The only exception would be if you happen to be right in a terrorist attack, which can happen anywhere nowadays.

Since it's all a matter of opinion, it's really impossible to learn from others what's the best or worst place on earth. As you have seen from this thread, people have completely different views on Paris, and I'm sure the same is true for many other places. I went with a group to Morocco recently, and at the end of the tour about half the people in our group would have said Morocco is the worst place on earth, while the other half loved it. Wherever you go, you must go with an open mind and an open heart. By doing this, you might never visit a place that you consider the "worst" in the world.

The slums of Sao Paulo or Calcutta? Not that I've ever been...

Worst place I've been to in Europe? That's hard to say. Probably Dublin. Not a bad place, mind you, but a week there is about 5 days too many.

Sorry to offend all the Paris lovers here. Lev's question is a bit ambiguous. To clarify... Paris for me is not the "worst place on earth." I was responding really to the "not friendly" part of his post. For me, it is the least friendly place I have ever been (I've been there on 4 separate occasions.) But then I have not traveled outside the US, Mexico, Canada, and Europe, and that's just my personal experience - which is what I thought Lev was asking for.

The worst place on earth I've ever laid eyes on? I really do hate L.A.

Yep I'll salute the 82nd Airborne guys, too. My son (1st Marines) is currently in Ramadi (same general area) on his second tour of duty in Iraq. Last year, once all the fighting was over, he was based just overlooking Babylon. He said that it was an very interesting part of the world, and Babylon and Ur would be wonderful destinations someday. He doesn't have much to say for where he is now, but based on the news I'd agree that Fallujah is probably one of the worst places on earth at present.

I'm very happy to acknowledge your kind words to Matt and his buddies, even if I have hijacked this thea a little bit.

On the original question, I guess I actually agree with <<Perhaps it is better to not respond to such threads in the future.>>

It is odd that destination-bashing is so popular here. About the same time as the aforementioned "I'll never come back here!", there was also a thread - - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34470857 - - called "I will ALWAYS come back here."

It fizzled out at 28 responses.

There's a huge stretch of desert between Tucson, Arizona and Las Crucias, New Mexico that could easily be voted, "Worst Place On Earth".

Blessing to the 82nd Airborne and welcome home. Whether or not I agree with this war I'm very grateful to the those who have chosen to stand up for the USA. My prayers are always with you.
