Why is airfare to Italy so expensive?

Thanks for all the input.
After doing a lot of searching, we had decided on CO from Houston to Milan (thru Newark) and back from Rome to Houston thru Newark.This was based on departure and arrival times as well as layover times.Those flights were more convenient and worked out well with taking off from work, etc. At one time this open jaw was less expensive than round trip.I understand that Italy is further away, but fares to other destinations are not increasing in price like those to Italy.
We will either have to wait and hope that the prices go down, be more flexible in our travel plans- but I sure don't want to take a cheaper flight if it means 30+ hours of travel- or change destinations.

Travelocity will let you keep a list of up to five different flights, and send you an email if the rates on any of them go up or down at least $25. There are some minor defugalities, but it definitely helps one be aware of sales.
