Be gentle with me.
I've been trying all day to print on my brand new computer a Paris bus map from the ratp website.
I get the message that this is pdf file and I have to download Adobe reader. I have done that in the past. I press yes to start the Adobe download, and I keep getting the message that it is waiting for a connection, which doesn't change.
A new icon appears on my desk top, but when I try to open it I get a message that this program cannot be opened.

Any suggestions?

Go to the Adodbe site and download the latest Reader. It will take a few minutes depending on your connection speed. Then follow directions for installation. After that all .PDF file will open automatically.

I guess I wasn't clear
I've been to the Adobe site, I've clicked on Download, my screen shows Adobe Download Manager with the message 'waiting for connection' but that doesn't change, no evidence that download is in progress, even after an hour

I just sent you the file (hope it's the correct one) to your email as an attachment so hopefully you can open it from there. Are you able to open other pdf files? If so, it may be the ratp site you're having a problem with.

I'm not a techie but I've got one working in the basement (bless him) so if need be we can call in the reserves.

I'm unable to open any pdf files, because I can't seem to download Adobe
I've rebooted several times

I now have a new icon on my desktop
it's name is
ytb01_efgsip

when I try to open that, I get the message that it's 'not a valid win32 application'
I also cannot delete this icon, I've tried dragging it to recycle, and I've tried deleting it from within my Start menu

My Adobe Download Manager is still saying 'waiting for a connection'

My system is windows XP professional
My computer is a month old, but this is my first time trying to download pdfs or Adobe (but I've done it at work so I understand how it's supposed to operate)

I don't quite get what's happening with Adobe. The wierdest thing is a couple of times recently when I've opened Adobe on a site, my computer literally freezes up. I have to shut down and restart to unlock the freeze, obviously caused by Adobe. Yet normally it works fine.

Try going to adobe.com to download the program directly. It could be a problem w/the link on the ratp site.

For the ytb01_efgsip problem, try searching on google groups for "can't delete windows xp icon."

Go to http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Select your operating system (maybe you were trying to download it but didn't select the proper operating system? Just a thought).

Download the file. (that icon on your desktop - ytb01_efgsip
- doesn't look like anything related to Adobe). You should end up with an Adobe-related file in your Program files.

Maybe the new Adobe software is too recent for the rapt.com to open? If so, search the Adobe website for earlier versions of Adobe Reader. I've actually come across that problem before and had to "downgrade" to an earlier version to open something up. I have version 6.0 (the latest is 7.0) and I know it works with the ratp site because I've used it. If you have no luck, maybe I can send you the version I have (that would be interesting - I've never emailed free downloadable software to anyone before, but I bet there's a way!).

Elaine, please select and copy this direct link, open a new Internet Explorer window, paste the link into the Address bar, and then press RETURN or ENTER.

The Adobe Download Manager, a spyware-type program* that Adobe tries to force people to download when they ask for Adobe Reader, is probably causing your problem.

Also note that you should log in with administrative privileges before installing software under Windows NT/2000/XP.

Adobe 7.0 is the only choice on their website
I meet the system requirements of having windows xp professional

When I canceled the Adobe download that wasn't working anyway, that funny new icon on my desktop disappeared, so it WAS Adobe related.

I have all this anti virus and antispyware software on my computer, I wonder if that has been interfering with this download?

This time I chose the option of NOT using the Adobe Download Manager, and lo and behold, Adobe downloaded! I went to ratp (am I not the only person who has always referred to this transit system as 'rat pee'?) and printed!

I guess my sudden instinct about my computer protections was correct.

Also, I normally use firefox as my internet browser, but just for this download I used Explorer

I downloaded the latest Adobe Reader to my desktop, then installed it. For some wierd unknown reason, even though I associated all .pdf files with Acrobat, they wouldn't automatically open. However, if I also download a .pdf file to my desktop, then drag that file over to the Acrobat icon on the desktop, it opens up and works fine.

I don't know if you've solved your problems, but I also have had some problems in the past downloading Adobe (and I have a very large machine with lots of space, etc.). I don't recall exactly what happened, but I hated wasting time trying things, so just got the thing on CD and loaded it that way. I think they will send it to you on CD if you ask, although I got it from someone in my company.

However, even with Adobe, I have had problems printing the maps on ratp, so that's a second issue. I think there was something funny about those files, and they worked better as a GIF than a PDF. I always find it easier to download a file and then open it instead of trying to do it on the web site. Here is the general URL for a bus line map you can use

YOu just have to change the line number to what you want (it's in the middle, the above is for line 91)

I find it interesting others have problems opening files online with Adobe, as I have had that problem since upgrading to their latest version and I never did before. It takes forever and sometimes freezes up my computer (I used to think it was frozen, but if you wait long enough, it finally opens), but if I download the file and then open it from my desktop, it works easily and quickly.
