Which Rome Airport to Return Rental Car

We are returning from Tuscany to Rome on a Sunday, so the best option for returning our rental car is at the airport. Is there any reason to pick one airport over the other? Using mappy it appears it takes about one and a half hours to get from Orvieto to either airport, but is one airport easier for rental car returns and/or getting into the city center from (cab or train) early evening?

Thank you.

Hi T4 - Wouldn't it be easier to get into Rome from Orvieto by train? Much quicker and less hassle IMO ...

Neither airport is particularly convenient from Orvieto as you would have to go around the GRA, but public transport is better from FCO.

Hope this helps ...

We did this on return from Umbria. Loop Rome to the west to get to FCO. The train station is very close to the rental car dropoff area & you can buy tickets & walk right on. Hauling bags on/off is the only hard part.

I'd go with Steve_James recommendation. Why bother with a return to Rome at all when you can return it in Orvieto and take an easy train into Rome to Termini?

We rented and returned our car at Termini RR station in Rome without crisis.

I can think of various reasons to drive back to Rome, even if you are through sightseeing. One is cost. But if your charges will be similar whether you drop in Rome or Orvieto, then leaving the car in Ovieto (I think rental agencies are at or near the train station) would make sense. You'll end up in Rome by train with no taxi cost, etc from the airport. Amd you don't have to risk traffic.

If you're riving and haven't been to Viterbo, or other spots north of Rome, you could come that way, and south on the Via Cassia.

Thanks for the replies.

My first choice was to drop off the car in Orvieto and train into Rome, but the Rental Car agency is closed on Sunday. Hertz said they might could arrange a drop off, but after repeated calls and promises of getting back to me, decided just best to drive. After two previous, not pleasant, Rome driving experiences we do not want to have to drive in the city. So, we thought we'd return the car to one of the airports. We haven't ever flown into or out of Campiano (sp?) so didn't know how easy/difficult it would be to get to the city center by cab/train after dropping off our rental car.

Again, thanks for the replies. I do wish we could just take the train. We acutally thought of spending the night in Orvieto but do not one to give up one of my only 4 nights in Rome!
