Where should I drop off car?

I will be in Cortona and the last night I would like to drop the car off in Rome and stay there. I think it would be easier to do that for my husband and I as we are stressed about returning car to airport. Where is the best place to stay in Rome for 1 night? The next day then we can just take a cab to airport. How far is airport from city of Rome?
Thanks, Elaine

Why not drop off the car in the nearest town with a rental agency AND a train station and take the train to Rome?

Driving into Rome can be pretty stressful!

I agree. I would avoid driving in Rome at all costs. We just rented a car in Italy, and dropped it off at the nearest town with a train station and trained into Rome. A lot less stressful, and we always enjoy train rides.

I personally would stay in the city for one night, perhaps around Piazza Navona or the Pantheon. Both of these locations are centrally located and have lots of great restaurants and cafes nearby. How early is your flight? We usually have a 7:00 flight out of Rome so we have a taxi pick us about around 5:00. There is very little traffic in Rome that early in the morning, so we've always gotten to the airport in about twenty minutes.

Hi 67,

If your rental agency has an office in Orvieto, you might want to drop the car there.

It's about an hour by car from Cortona, and an hour by train from Rome TE.

Orvieto is worth a visit.

If you do drop the car off in Rome, it is at the train station.

It depends on whom you rent from, but ordinarily there is quite a choice of locations for dropping off a car in Rome. The train station is just one. For Europcar, there are drop offs in EUR, the Vatican area, the area of Villa Borghese -- just to name a few. All of them are a pain in the butt!
