Which part of Florene is best to stay in?

We will be staying in Florence for 1 night - we arrive early on a Wed. morning and leave late Thurs. pm for Venice.
What part of town would be the best for us to get to the majority of sights?
TIA! Daryl

Stay near Piazza della Signoria-it's close to the Uffizi, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo, San Croce...and a wonderful spot to sit out at night with the statues. How are you getting to Venice? We're doing the same thing, but starting in Paris. We'll take the train from Paris to Florence, then train again to Venice.

Hi dl,

The historic area of Florence is rather small.

What's your budget?

i actually loved staying in oltrarno...more residential and avoided the huge tourist traps abound. and it's only a 5-8 minute walk back across the water anyways.

the whole city is maybe 30 minutes from one end to the other...so you really can't pick wrong. even near the train station was perfectly safe.

for the florence to venice train, try to grab a eurostar train. and don't bother getting the tickets before hand...just show up and they have automated ticket terminals to buy from (5 minutes tops).

I prefer to stay a bit out of the way in high season and in the center of things in winter when the tourists are gone.

For one night, I would suggest a room with a view over the Arno, if budget permits. The Berchielli offers nice rooms with a view.

You can walk everywhere in Florence very easily.

Hi dl,

That's a very satisfactory budget for accomodations.

I suggest entering "Florence AND Hotel" (without quotes) in the "search this forum" box for reviews.

You might want to consider http://www.villafiesole.it/

It is in Fiesole, in the hills above the city, about 15 min by bus from the SMN train station.

Beautiful views of the city at sundown.

We will be staying at the Hermitage in early October, as suggested by a friend.
http://www.hermitagehotel.com/
It is within walking distance of Duomo, etc.
