Which of these Venice hotels has the better location?

Locanda Sturion or Hotel San Moise? I've narrowed it down to these two. Please help!

Both are in pretty heavy foot traffic areas. San Moise is closer to San Marco, and Sturion is close to the Rialto Bridge. Either is a pretty decent hotel; neither is luxurious. For my own use, I would choose San Moise because the Rialto traffic and noise can be bothersome. But if you like hustle and bustle around the bridge and the market, go for Sturion.

Wayne, thanks so much for the reply. I was leaning toward the San Moise because I've read good reviews of it on this board. But do you have any other hotel suggestions? I'd like to stay in a central area, but I want a quiet hotel.

Heather
We stayed at the Violino d'Oro just by the San Moise piazza. We loved the location, close but separate from San Marco and a good location for many vaporetti lines.
We did find there was noise from the Gondola station right beneath our window but we loved this noise and it was not a problem during the night itself.
The Flora is also only a minute's walk from San Moise and is often recommended highly on this board.
Kavey

Heather
We have used the Sturion and liked it very much. We did not find noise to be a problem and our room was directly above the canal. The room was very nice, large and well done, and the breakfast service was quite good. We would say this is a good choice.

Now, for the only down side. The door to the Sturion is just off the main sidewalk, sort of up a little alley, and there is no lift. The hotel is on the upper floors of the building and it is a long (really long) climb up the stairs to the hotel. If you can not handle stair climbing then this could be a problem. Also you will be carrying your bags up this long flight of stairs as well. Other than the climb, it is a wonderful hotel and I would not hesitate to use it again.

Curt,
Good warning, I think there are something like 100 stairs there! That was the first place I stayed in Venice about 15 years ago, travelling with 2 friends. We were all young and healthy but tired and lazy by the time we arrived at hotel. Pulled the door open and walked in and a chorus of "ohmigod!"

Fastforward: my friend Nancy is recommending the Sturion to other friends and warns about the stairs, ..."but, they are beautiful white marble..." And so they are! It's a lovely hotel, the canal front rooms are a dream come true and noise is not really a problem.

We just got back and I was doing some scouting for hotels. I agree with Wayne and Kavey--that area is hard to beat.
The Violino d'Oro is perfect for location, but I also like the Hotel Ala at Santa Maria del Giglio. The Hotels Torino and the Kette are also in the same ballpark and nice. Good luck !
