Autoeurope and Kemwel (sister agencies) probably have the best reputation and generally good prices. As for the cars, you are never guaranteed a specific car, at least at the lower end of the market.

If you find a special deal on Autoeurope.com, print out every web page as you go through your reservation.

I failed to do so, and they reneged on their promise of waiving pick-up and drop-off fees.

Read all fine print.

We go to Germany at least 1-2 times per year and have done our car rentals thru

www.gemut.com

for the past several years. We have an upcoming trip in December and have once again booked with them. You can send an email thru their website but I would recommend calling their toll free number. They will meet or beat competitors prices and you pay in USD, a big plus if you're in the US. Our rental in Dec. comes with a free one class upgrade but we're paying for an economy car. You may want to take a look.
Enjoy your trip,
Susan

Hi Rosie,

We have used www.gemut.com and www.travelocity.com for our car rentals in Germany. We used the toll free numbers from the websites to reserve. Both companies were very helpful. At the lower end, you never know exactly what car you'll be getting, although we've never been disappointed with any car we've recieved. A few years ago, we actually wound up with a much nicer car than we would have ever asked for. It was a busy morning at the desk in Munich airport, a few people cut in front of us, and when we got to the desk, the agent "rewarded us" for our patience.

Per Robespierre's advice to print out copies of all agreements and special offers--that is good advice that applies to any car rental company, hotel offer, etc.

As pja1 says, car rental companies do not guarantee a particular make or model of car when you make a reservation. They don't even guarantee a particular class of car when you rent.

We were once stuck with a VERY bright, cherry red PT Cruiser on a trip to New Mexico and Colorado--not only a piece of garbage to drive, but trailer park trashy looking as well. However, we are survivors and somehow managed to live to tell the tale. Hah, hah. They at least did give us a pretty good discount for the inconvenience and embarassment.
