Solar, Berlin

I promise this is the last question I will ask about this 24 hour trip. I think I've done less planning for 2 weeks in another Continent. In fact, I KNOW I have.

So, has anyone eaten in this high rise restaurant. Any opinions?

I have.
Bar cum restaurant in an older (I guess 70ies) highrise in Mitte.

Restaurant offers decent food. Nothing aspiring for stars (depsite its high floor location and long opening hours ;-) ), but not bad.

The bar is particularly good due to the views. It attracts a - for Berlin, which is rather relaxed - stylish crowd. Restaurant views aren't bad either, but it's probably easier to really enjoy them when one can walk around with a drink in the hand than just sitting at a table.

Overall, I think it's recommendable as long as one can do with decent, but not spectacular, food.

Hi Sheila, sorry I hadn't previously seen any of your Qs about Berlin. Here is a link to my trip reports FWIW - http://www.fodors.com/forums/threads...p;tid=34614269

The area we really like for eating (in trad old German taverns) is Nikolaiviertel so not near where you are staying, but maybe easy to get to by U bahn ? I can look up the station if you are interested.

Hi, Caroline, sorry to hijack the thread, could you please post the U bahn station for the restaurant? as I will be in Berlin for more than one week from next week.

Thanks,

JudyC,

while I am not Caroline, I still take the freedom to reply:

U-Klosterstr or U-Alexanderplatz

for Nikolaiviertel.

Klosterstrasse, that's the one we've used. I think it would be preferable to Alexanderplatz which from what I remember has lots of exits & the area is pretty confusing when you emerge.

Guys, thanks again. We ended up being somewhat challenged in that everywere we tried was booked.

We have booked Ottenthal. It was recommended elsewhere on here.

Caroline, the deal is that a client is taking 10 of us on the 10.10 out of Glasgow tomorrow coming back on the 1.50 the next day. It's a thank you to three guys who've been bulleted by his JV partner- you know, the ones I'm always going to see in Edinburgh.

I've organised a tour guide to pick us up, give us a three hour architectural tour of Berlin in the afternoon, we're staying in Hotel Q and we're now dining at Ottenthal. I'm hoping for a lie in on Friday; then I'll either use the Spa or shop. Tough call, eh?

Sounds great, Sheila - have a lovely time ! I did occur to me after I'd posted that the places we like to eat aren't much use if you don't want to eat big hunks of meat

If you decide on shopping, the food hall at KaDeWe is amazing.

Ottenthal is a good choice in my opinion. Good quality food, but unpretentious.
Stick to the classics on the menu, they are in general better than the more innovative and ambitious offerings.
The atmosphere is quite busy and can be a tad noisy as this is a very narrow room. I still like it - and it's walking distance to Hotel Q.
