Anyone with a rudimentary understanding of plate tectonics will appreciate that the UK have been gradually floating away from the Americas for quite some time. It is firmly part of the European continental shelf and as such geographically we are for now part of Europe.

If Ireland - in the EU- is part of the European Union then I think the UK - west of Ireland is in Europe - physically if not mentally.
