Where to stay in Munich
We have a lay-over in Munich and I would really like to make the most of it. Since we have just one night and a morning, I thought the Altstadt section of town would be best, preferably by the Marienplatz square. Am I wrong? I have never been to Germany and would really appreciate any recomendations for places to stay. Thanks, Johonna

Johonna, we stayed at the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, www.kempinski-vierjahreszeiten.de. It was only a 150 per night(internet booking). Great location right on Maximillianstrasse. Since you only a a day I would try it. Near the Hofbrauhaus which is a great time. Plus your right on the main drag of some of the best shopping in Europe. Hope this helps.
hi,
having lived in the centre for 18 months up to Aug last year, i would totally agree with you - go the centre. Kempinski has had mixed reviews but location is good. I checked out Torbrau - very central also. Rooms were small and OK although guest reviews on internet give this a thumbs up. Also Platzl is another cheaper hotel that is well located and gets good reviews. I think the best hotel in Munich is the Rafael Mandarin Oriental also very central - generally superior reviews to Kempinski (no criticism at all seen of it). But not cheap! I do no know so much about the Hofbrauhaus - I know quite a few Munich people who scorn it - perhaps a little snobbishly but there are a hell of a lot of German and foreign tourists there - lots of stag nights, with an awful lot of them, men and women, intent on getting totally hammered. YOu could be lucky and sit with friendly, and only a bit merry people or you could sit next to some obese, drunk bloke wanting to chat you up and slobbering over you as I observed there. Maybe that is your taste so it could be recommendation, but am assuming it is not.
