Where to stay in London on a budget
We will be in London 9/22/10 - 10/5/10; 3 single women, ages 50 and 55
We want a clean safe place to stay. As close to London as possible, hopefully in central London. Need 3 single beds, and a bathroon in our room. A continential beakfast would be an added plus. Near tubestation(s) Our budget is around $600 a week . We do not care if it is a hotel or an apartment. Any suggestions

If you mean $600 for 3 people - that is less than $100 per night. For that you may get 3 beds in a dorm room of a hostel.
You might try looking at apartments but hink finding 3 single beds will be a problem and for that price it probably will be at then end of hell and gone (at lest an hour from the center).
Priclien hs some god deals in London - but I don't think that good - and is for 2 people only - usually sharing a double bed.
You might look at university housing options. Otherwise I thnk your budget is just way too low.

$600 = only approx £390. That is very VERY cheap for a flat in London. Even a tiny studio, let alone one large enough for 3 adults. $700 is approx £450 and that might be doable in the outskirts, but still a pretty tall order. In London, the typical - not posh by any means - 1 bdrm short term rental will run from about $1000.00 (£650) and up.
Here is group of flats at St Katharine's Marina just down river from the Tower of London. Their 1-bdrms that sleep 4 run £670 ($1030) and are considered a bargain.

You might try At Home in London agency if you're willing to consider B&B's. http://www.athomeinlondon.co.uk/ We used the agency happily in 2008 and have a reservation for this summer which I hope serves us as well. It has 3 single beds, in-room bath, and is 5 minutes or so from Bayswater or Queensway Tube stops. It's only slightly over your budget. (and we got a discount in 2008 for staying 2 weeks)
Porchester Gardens, Bayswater, London W2 [Ref: 172]
Zone(s): 1 (Central)
If such B&B's might be ok, you could check this out. (As we haven't stayed in this room, I don't have first hand knowledge, but I am happy with the agency and our room in 2008 was great, being either exactly as billed or even better.)

We've also used www.athomeinlondon.co.uk and agree it's a good resource. Also try www.airbnb.com - similar in principle but not restricted to London (though has a lot of London listings including apartments).

We stayed at the Hilton Metropole in 2007. We booked it through Priceline and I believe we paid about $100 US at the time. The hotel is very close to the Edgeware station and about 3 blocks from Paddington station. There is a bus stop across the street from the hotel (bus #23) that takes you to Trafalgar Square, and along to the Tower. An employee at the tube station recommended the bus to us and we found it convenient and a great way to see the city. A Marks and Spencer was just across the street as well as restaurants etc.
