Where to stay in Lake Como

Hi All

We will be travelling to the Lakes district in October. We will not have a car and wondering where is the best spot to stay. Also I read somewhere that the ferries stop operating in October is this true? Or is it just the tourist around lake ferries that stop.

Thanks in advance for your replies.

The ferries stop operating into some smaller villages, but they still opearate otherwise people wouldn't be able to get around! Here's a link to the ferry website. The temetables for Oct won't be there yet, but the current ones will give you an idea.

There are lots of great villages and towns to stay and you can see a lot using public transport. Bellagio is the most touristy place....
We usually stay in a small village called Nesso between Bellagio and Como. Como town is great too.

Especially in October I would stay in Bellagio. It´s very very picturesque and not so crowded in the fall.

I stayed in Bellagio in October and the ferries were definitely running then, although on the winter schedule. I loved Bellagio and took the ferries to many of the lake towns.

Bellagio for me as well. Beautiful, good ferry service, different types of lodging (La Limonera is a nice apartment right in the (upper part of) town; Villa Serbelloni has self-catering apartments as well; and of course some hotels (Hotel du Lac, Hotel Florence, etc.) and some others. We've spent a week there at a time and had plenty to see, enjoy, do,

October can be iffy---we were there last in early Oct. and it was fine. There are 5 major lakes in that region--that is your first decision. Here is an overview of 4 of them. Do not overlook Lago Maggiore as an option.
