Where to drop off Rental Car in Rome???

Hi

We'll be renting a car at the end of our stay in Florence, driving through and staying in lower Tuscany and then driving to Rome - where we want to drop off the car when we get there.

We are staying at the Albergo Del Senato and having never been to Italy or Europe - I was wondering if someone could help direct me to a drop off location for the car.

Oops - I just realized, I haven't decided which car rental agency to go with yet - still price shopping.

Well, can someone recommend a rental agency with good prices and tell me about drop off locations?

Sorry for being so ignorant.
thanks.
btd,

Whichever car rental agency you decide on should be able to tell you where to drop off the car.

Consider dropping off your car in Orvieto, take time to see that beautiful little city and then take the train (about one hour) into Rome. We did this in October and were really happy not to have to drive anywhere near Rome. We rented in Florence from AutoEurope, who used Avis for our rental. In Orvieto, Avis office is very close to the funicular that takes you up to the old part of the town. Easy walking distance with luggage. The next morning, we rode the funicular down to the train station and were on our way to Rome. Very easy.

One other thing, don't for a second think that you're ignorant. We all have to start somewhere when we go to Europe. You'll learn lots as you go along. I just wish this forum had existed when I took my first trip.

Buon viaggio

I agree with Betsey I would not enjoy driving in the Rome traffic. I would either drop off the rental car in Orvieto or at the FCO airport.

We drove from Todi (Umbria) to FCO & dropped the car. You swing around Rome on the loop highway & do not have to drive in city traffic at all.

Then cab or train into city. We took the train in ($18 & long, long walks with luggage) and took a cab out ($50).

At FCO keep to the outside (left lanes) on the lower level & watch for the (small) car rental signs & follow them into the parking garage & up to the agencies.

We returned our car in Rome last month . The drop off was at the train station, If you have someone with you to navigate you there, it is no problem. All the rental returns are on the left side of the station(when you are facing the main entrance), don't bother going into the station there are no rental offices there.
Judy

We did the same route last year and dropped our car in Siena, took the express bus to Rome. Was so EASY and relaxing.

I vote for Orvieto. This is more practical than going all the way out to FCO and incurring the extra charge for and airport drop off. Besides Orvieto is a lovely town, you'll want to visit.

Second choice would be dropping at the Rome Termini (main railroad station) as long as the agency gives you good directions to find it. The drop-off will likely be on the Via Marsala side of the station. The above poster is incorrect in stating there are no car rental agencies in the station. There are, in fact, quite a few. Picking up a car from the station is very easy. The cab fare from the station to the Albergo del Senato (which I believe is near the Pantheon) will run about $12 USD with luggage. I took this ride in reverse a year ago and it was 25,000 lire at that time.
