car rental when leaving rome

We plan on renting a car when we leave rome and getting onto route A12 heading north towards Tuscany. What is a nearby car rental location to A12 so we wouldn't have to do too much driving in rome?

I hope you're not planning to just walk in and rent a car! You need to get this arranged in advance. If you rent through Auto Europe or Kemwel (brokers) or an individual rental company, they will be able to answer that and any other questions you may have and set you up for a car pickup at your preferred location.

We usually take the train to Orvieto (hourly departures - 1 hr trip), pick up the car at the station, stash the bags in the car while still parked in the rental lot, and visit Orvieto for several hours. Then off to Tuscany.

I think you mean A-1, but I hate to drive out of Rome except on Sunday AM. I agree with Stu about getting the car in Orvieto---just off A-1.

We did it from central Rome, but it was on a Sunday morning. I agree with the others about taking the train to Orvieto, but if you decide to go from central Rome, print out turn by turn directions from
