RENTAL CAR DROP OFF OUTSIDE ROME

I have driven in Rome before & prefer not to do it again. We will be driving south from France, with a few stops along the way. I am wondering if anyone knows a good place to return the rental car outside Rome & hop a train into Rome. Thanks for the help.

Thanks. Have you done this? How much time should we allow?

there are about 10 trains a day(approx) from Orvieto to Rome. The trip takes one to one and a half hours, depending on which type of train you take. Easy to just buy your tickets at the station. We rented our car through autoeurope and got the car from Hertz. Autoeurope is just a broker. The Hertz depot is across the street from the train station. We were there Oct. 09.

If you have the time you could drop off the car, then "tour" Orvieto and then catch a train to Rome. We have visited Orvieto in the past as a day trip from Rome.

Are you aware of a drop charge if you got the car in France?

Thanks for all the replies. What good to see in Orvieto and is there a luggage hold at the station? I know that after 911 many were closed.
I haven't gotten as far as pricing the rental car but I was vaguely aware that there would probably be a drop charge. If it's large perhaps we should just take a train over the border. In France we only need the car for the Grasse/ Nice area. I toured htat area years ago without a car but I am taking my mother on the trip & a car would be so much easier.

The drop-off charge is likely to be "huge" - as in about $500.

I would take a train over the border and rent the car when you get there.

Wow! I think I'll reconsider my itinerary. Thanks for the heads-up.

Just wondering if you could take a train directly to Sorrento from Orvieto. Have been pondering our route from Radda in Chianti to Sorrento and have been advised to drive directly to Sorrento and drop car there. (on a Saturday in October)

The only train to Sorrento is a local suburban line from Naples that is crowded and dirty.
