When staying at a B&B is there a time etiquette,

Time for what? Arrival? Departure? Breakfast? what . . .

Each B&B owner sets its own time you can check in. Some are there all day long, some leave for shopping/business and give range like >>check in between 4 and 7 PM<<. Others will state something like -- >>please call to tell us what time you will arrive<<

As for checking out -- that pretty much has to be after breakfast is finished and that varies from place to place.

If you mean get in late after an evening out - many B&B owners will give you a key if you pln on staying out after a certain time.
If you mean arriving late looking for a bed it depends on how late, but I doubt they would turn you away if they are still up. If you have booked it is usually good to give an idea of when you will arrive.
Early mornings - how early? B&B have set times for breakfast, earlier during the week that at weekends, and it varies from one to the next. If you are leaving before the designated breakfast time you can usually settle up the night before and just see yourself out when you are ready. But you won't normally get breakfast served before the designated time.

Occasionally when we have to leave very early for our flight out the hostess will leave a cold breakfast out....muffins, cereal (milk in a tiny fridge), etc.

Do you mean >>mornings that I leave early<< to tour around and come back later in the day -- or -- do you mean checking out early? Leaving the building early is no big deal, though you might miss out on breakfast.

If you mean checking out early -- that <i>could</i> be a problem. You'll probably have to settle up your account the night before and hopefully can get a cold breakfast.

Coming in late at night is no problem. Either the door will be unlocked or you'll have a key. Checking in late at night is not usually a good idea or even doable in most places. These are not hotels w/ 24 hours desks. They are small places w/ 2, 3 maybe 4 rooms to rent.
