Where should we go?
Family of 4, kids 11 and 13, thinking about Paris and taking train to South of France in August. We don't want to rent a car. Also, husband and I have been to Paris before. Is this feasible? Also, I'd like to rent an apartment instead of using a hotel. 5-6 days in each place. Which areas would be most convient. Thanks.

sure, it's feasible. I really like taking the trains in France, they are so efficient and kids usually like trains, also (and may find it an easier way to travel than hours in the car). You can get down to Provence in just a few hours by fast train, although it's much longer to go all the way over to Nice. If I were you, I'd stay in Provence because the coast is going to be a zoo in August, anyway, and packed with vacationers from all over (France and Europe).
Of course, it will be very hot in Provence at that time, although it can cool down at night and have a nice breeze. But, just wanted to warn you that it may well be hot in a rental. I have had a few somewhat sleepless nights in Provence in places without AC.
I think the general area around Avignon, St Remy and the Luberon is where a lot of people like to go. there is a lot to see and do, and it's very pleasant.
I don't think you'll find it easy to rent an apt. in Provence for only 5-6 days in peak season.

I (sorta) disagree. If you find the right property at the right price, then paying for an entire week - - and only using 5 or 6 nights - - can still make a lot of sense.
You just need to be aware that most rentals are relatively inflexible about wanting you to start on a Saturday. Agreeing on an earlier departure would rarely be a problem.
I'm not clear if you mean a rental in Paris and one in the South also - - or two rentals outside Paris, with a longer total trip duration or not. Whichever, francevillas.com has a lot of very good properties, and it's quite pleasant to work with them.
Best wishes,
Rex

Check out VRBO.com and rent for 7 days. You might want to reconsider renting a car, at least for a day or two as there are so many charming villages and gorgeous countryside to see. I would think alot of effort would be spent dealing with trains if you only have 5-6 days.
