I also stayed in Eixample and really liked it - astounding architecture, lively residential/commercial residential neighbourhood with lots of shops and cafes and adjacent to the Barri Gotic and Las Ramblas - but removed from the crowds of tourists and the pickpockets they attract. I felt much more comfortable and less concerned about the need to keep my hand on my wallet at all times. I walked around late at night without any concerns. I stayed at a 3 1/2 star hotel called the Astoria Hotel (on Calle Paris) - it's part of the Derby Hotel chain. Go to http://www.derbyhotels.es/
It was an affordable 100 euros per night for an attractive, comfortable and quiet room.

if you opt for staying in an apartment, "flats by days" rents a good one in the borne district. it's called borne2. the borne is full of shops and eateries sort of like soho in new york. about a 10 to 15 minute walk to plaza catalunya, the ramblas and the port.
good luck!
