Don't get too hard on yourself...sometimes those "deals" are for flights and timings that most others don't want..and for good reason.
Face it: the cost of flying increases every year like all other prices generally increase..and this year's sale may or may not be as "cheap" as the prices were a year ago.

Last summer seat capacity was over 85%. Since the airlines really reduced the number of flights the last few years the old days of "knowing" there will be summer sales is over. Don't count on it and if you see a deal don't hesitate. I was able to get RT fare from London to the Midwest for $369 incl. taxes for July BUT I booked this last October, this fare was only offered for 1/2 day. $712 (IF it includes taxes) for an openjaw in mid-summer that you describe is quite reasonable.
