We took the tram that takes you past the castle and got off at the last stop. You're outside of Prague city limits. There's a restaurant across the street from the tram stop. Very inexpensive food. We really enjoyed ourselves there.

There are lots of cheaper meals in Prague, but this particular post was someone asking about suggestions for special restaurants for an anniversary. So that's completely different from whatever place I can find where I can eat for very little.

My favorite was Restaurant U Certa on the main drag up the hill from Charles Bridge (on the right as you go uphill) - there's a 5-foot tall fat wooden devil outside its door. It's very reasonably priced, has intimate indoor seating, good service and I loved the grilled chicken and veggie sheshkebob - it's a bit hard to find "lighter" food in Prague.

For good traditional Czech fare try Restaurant U Glaubicu - in Malostranske Namesti. Interesting old building with long history - you eat in the old brewery cellar. We go here for lunch at least once every time when we visit Prague. Hearty fare that is best washed down with a good beer! Malostranske namesti 266/5

For a very nice dinner (and more expensive!!) consider U Zlate Hrusky - on Novy Svet down from Loretsky Nameste. The restaurant setting is wonderful and Novy Svet is a beautiful lane tucked away with houses and a small park. See below for the restaurant's internet site. It's been about 4 years since we've eaten there. We typically eat at the outdoor restaurant on the other side of the street - more casual dining (for the life of me I can't remember the name!).

We also ate at Pod Most (or is it Mostem) which another poster mentioned above in 2005. It is literally, under the Charles bridge on the Mala Strana side. As I recall the menu wasn't extensive but we had a wonderful dinner of grilled meats (him chicken - I think I had either rabbit or chicken) and wine in a unique outdoor setting. Cross the Charles Bridge from the Old Town towards Mala Strana, walk down the steps to your left down to Kampa Island, go under the bridge and it's round to your left. (If memory serves me correctly!) Seating is very limited - but it's wonderful at night with the candlelight outside!

When you get tired of heavy foods of the area, you might like Italian. Right by the clock at the Square there is an italian restaurant with patio seating. But don't stop there, right behind it is an opening for another italian restaurant where you go down stairs for the dining room. They even bring the fresh pasta to show it to you. It was incredibly delicious!
I too loved Restaurant David. My mouth stil waters remembering the pork tenderloin that is finished off at the table. We liked it so much, all 4 of us voted to eat there twice.

I wonder if anyone here would admit to having eaten in one of those two "outdoor" restaurants near the clock?

For places that supposedly don't have very good food or that have been criticized as being "touristy" there seem to be an awful lot of people eating in them...and having their silouettes done...part of the Prague experience for some I guess.

dukey-

Never eaten there but will admit to having drinks overlooking the square and the clock. We rested our feet while waiting for the clock to chime. Certainly overpriced however, it was the perfect place to people watch and see the square fill up as the hour approached.
