Where am I in Paris???
My family (with 2 daughters 16 & 19) will be traveling to Europe in mid-July and will be starting out in London for a few days. Looking for great recommendations for a hotel in Paris (will probably need 2 rooms) that is no more than $200/night, is 4-star, and has the "feel of Paris". Want to be centrally located close to the action (i.e. Times Square!), close to shopping, cafes, transit, site-seeing. Also, any web-sites recommended for deep discounts other than Priceline? Thanks so much and looking forward to our first time in the city.

May I ask why you put "where am I in xxx" when you're asking for hotel reservations? I don't get it.
As far as hotels go, we enjoyed Hotel St. Germain in the 6th, 88 Rue de Bac
http://www.hotel-saint-germain.fr/
A Jr. room w/ shower is 150 euro per night.
We also liked Hotel Henri IV Rive Gauche in the lively 7th.

Miss Atlanta: I REALLY don't get it. What is up with all your "Where am I? . . ." threads?
Even "Reposting: Where am I in London"
Are you just trying to be "cute"? Why not just put in your titles what you want to know.

a 4* for 160€? you'll need some luck and a good discount to get that...your timing does fall into the beginning of summer promos, though...
You know to do deep research if using Priceline for Paris, as the defined districts can be misleading.

For those of you overly concerned about my posting title, let me explain. I want to know "where I am" in these cities as far as hotel location and what surrounds me, i.e. food, transit, busy vs. quiet, etc. Though it makes sense to me, guess others get confused. As far as London reposts, as soon as I put it up, saw where another had not listed city in the title, and a reply asked that they do that, so I posted again with the city name. I had hoped a new post over an old one would wipe it out. Sorry, sorry to everyone. Didn't mean to cause a problem here.

You don't cause a problem, some people are just... well, curmudgeons.
I can recommend a hotel in the 1eme, out your door and across the road is the east end of the Louvre, the Pont Neuf is to the left (a tea shop, chocolatier, an cafes abound...) and straight across the river to the Left Bank, and I think it is totally "Times Square" without the "more spectacular and colorful characters" (How is that for politically correct?). No one place in Paris is that central, Paris is beautifully spread out!
Look up the Hotel Relais du Louvre - they have a splendid apartment on the top floor of the building, plenty of space AND within your budget, except it is a 3* - but its lovely.
Or two bedrooms - a choice.
I walked just about everywhere I wanted to go.

"Want to be centrally located close to the action (i.e. Times Square!),"
No doubt someone has already pointed this out to you, but many of the major cities have SEVERAL centres which cover different neeeds
There isn't the single all-encompassing "downtown" that US cities go in for.
And yes your title is irritating as hell.
What's wrong with "where should I stay in Paris" then add your criteria in the main text

I figured out what I thought your title meant...
As for Paris, I'd suggest you want to be either in St Germain or maybe around the Madeleine area on the Right Bank, or Opera area, or perhaps Place Vendome. I think either would work for being in the middle of things. There are some nice hotels in those locaitons, but your budget is just not possible for two rooms of a 4* hotel in the most expensive parts of Paris (which central action areas are), especially for really Parisian-style/feeling hotels.
Or do you mean $200 per room? That's much more do-able, but still not a lot to choose from. There aren't any great deep discount hotel sites I know of other than Priceline, and you won't get what you want on Priceline. You can get some discounts for last minute choices, sometimes, but that's haphazard.
I think the Aubusson in St Germain would fit your bill, but I don't know its current rates, or Relais St Germain. At least you may get some summer discounts if you are going mid-July, many hotels have them in August, and sometimes starting mid-July. That will help, as your criteria and budget are a little tough. YOu might forget the 4* stuff.

Christina, I did mean $200/night/room, or $400 total. Sorry. Glad that you understood my title, too! Just can't get over the fact that so many posters have more to say about my title than why I posted to begin with. I've tried to explain it, and apologize. If it's such an issue, then please just don't respond at all. I would prefer those that care to help me with info rather than complain and criticize.

I highly recommend EMERAUDE HOTEL MADELEINE PLAZA. It's steps away from the Madeleine Metro, just a couple blocks from the main shopping district, sandwiched between Hediard and Fauchon (great if you are a foodie!) I stayed here a couple years ago and loved it. I'm going back in a couple weeks and staying there again. I got a great rate at Allrez.com. I'm paying 149 euros per night. It's only a 3 star but still a good hotel with a great location.

missatlanta, now I was thinking your title was a new spin on Where's Waldo??
I think your daughters would love to stay somewhere in the 5th or 6th arr, lots of fun at night, close to the Seine, good shopping. We stay at 2 and 3 star hotels so can't point you to any great 4* hotels but can recommend the this part of the Left Bank. You are right to look for something that is more Parisian. Our stay at the Hilton near the Tour Eiffel was just too typical US, their restaurant was called Le Western, ugh
Have a great trip. Deborah

I've looked at a few suspects, and think that is the price range for a 3* hotel in those areas, not 4*. All the 4* hotels I checked were above 250 euro per night for a double room. Even some 3*s will not have rates that low in those expensive areas, but some do. Try the Hotel Fleurie in St Germain, the Millesime, or the HOtel Mansart near the Opera.

DeborahAnn, me too!!!! I want to play the game. I thought Miss Atlanta was going to describe an area and we could all guess where it was.
Miss Atlanta, are you blonde? wink wink
Let's see, Times Square is to New York as ______________ is to Paris??? Hmmm, must be near the big department stores. I sure wouldn't want to stay there although someone may have a suggestion for you.
DeborahAnn gave you an excellent suggestion. By the way, the star system is different in France than the US.
You should search on Priceline here because a lot of people have gotten burned using Priceline in Paris not knowing where the areas are. Some have ended up in the boonies! A web site that I like to use to look at the rates and locations of hotels is www.venere.com but not really discounted hotel rooms. I like to use the map to search by area.
