Thanks a lot! Now my kitchen is a mess after I just had to make a bacon sandwich. Good thing that chip thing doesn't appeal to me.

I agree that brown sauce has no place on a bacon sandwich. A proper bacon sandwich is white sliced bread, bacon. It's important not to drain the bacon, just transfer from pan to bread, so the bread absorbs some fat.

Chip butties, on the other hand, are what crazy people eat. No one should handle that much carbohydrate at a time.

The sandwich filling is sliced pickled onions (the big brown sour ones) with sharp cheddar cheese and Branston pickle. This is layered on buttered bread that has been sliced from a fresh-baked cottage loaf. Goes best with a pint of Guinness or Newcastle Brown. Heaven.

I had a wonderful limited edition sandwich from Boots once a few years back, sounds horrible but was lovely -: wholmeal bread with a mashed banana, cream cheese, walnut and grape filling (no butter!)...yummy yummy.

This post has really started my mouth watering, just thought of another I always had at a local cafe when a student in Sheffield, thick wholemeal bread with warm chicken, stuffing and black pepper mayo (and a little butter).

I agree with Deepa re: Mozzarella/ Tomato/ Basil sandwich.

My favorite before they yanked it was the avocado, parmesan, rocket, and pine nut sandwich. Does Pret make this again?

http://www.pret.com

As much as I love Pret's sandwiches they don't compare to their desserts. Mmmmm, the Seville orange muffin and the (very rich and creamy) Chocolate Mousse are addictive.
Chip butty - but not with McDonald's style French Fries, instead with proper chips cut from potatoes and deep fried in fat. Reminds me of going to the chippy in St Andrews at lunchtime during my schooldays....

Bacon rolls should ONLY be served with tomato ketchup. Any other form of sauce is, quite frankly, sacrilege. Also, you must only drink tea with it, otherwise you lose the saltiness of the bacon. Best consumed with a mammoth hangover...

In my house it's called cheese on toast. Preferably with a bit of Lea & Perrins. Or some mustard.

No question about it!!! It has to be a chip butty.....As an American, practically any of the other choices can be found in one form or another here in the States,,,,but NOT a chip butty!!!

Best wishes, Dave

Sorry - I have never understood english sandwiches.

First - there never seems to be anything in them - a ham sandwich is one slice (through which you can read) and butter! And what ham there is is half fat - there doesn;t seem to be the concept of removing the fat from the meat BEFORE making the sandwhich, rather than forcing the diner deconstruct it. And what every happened to the lettuce and tomato? (They seem to think this is a sandwhich by itself.)

Also, most sandwiches seem to come with butter - instead of mayo, mustard or some sort of dressing. (Just the idea of butter on a meat sandwhich - well that's enough to make me nauseous.)

Another thing I don;t get is the trditional english breakfast. Why are the eggs half done? Why is the bacon raw instead of crunchy? Why are ther mushrooms and tomatoes instead of home fries? Why do they use those special fake silver toast chilling racks - instead of putting it on a plate so it stays soft, warm and buttery?

On the other hand - tea is a great idea - with scones and jam - as long as you can convince them to leave the tea in the water long enought to turn it properly dark brown instead of pale tan.

LOL NYTraveler, that is why my late husband would not go to England. Your descriptions are exactly the same as all our friends. I must admit nothing sounds appealing. Take care.

Loveitaly.
Couldn't get my ex to go to the US because of the food.

According to him it was all huge steak and chips!!!!

I love the US but got to agree with him - not the food (unless in a good Italian/French Restaurant).
