I don't know the name of the sandwich, but on my weeklong trip to London last April I had one from Pret A Manger with chicken, bacon, and a delicious herb-type dressing on it. It was so good I had to go back a few days later for another.

I am so glad that they have Pret a Manger in NYC after reading all about these sandwiches!

Does anyone know exactly what an "Essex Huffer" is? I just love the name, but I am not sure what kind of bread or roll it has. Does anyone know the architecture of this very local favorite?

Favorite sandwich? Of course it must be a chip teacake in Lancashire or a one of each on a barm cake in Yorkshire.

Kim, could you post the recipe for Coronation Chicken? My husband has to eat "heart healthy" these days and doesn't care much for chicken or fish. I'm at my wit's end.
CORONATION CHICKEN
Makes 2 Servings
INGREDIENTS
For the curry dressing
1/4 cup low-fat mayonnaise
1-tablespoon curry paste (we used Patak’s Original Korman Curry Paste)
1 tablespoon lemon juice
DIRECTIONS
Whisk all ingredients to combine. You can make the dressing one-day ahead.
For the sandwich:
6 oz. Chicken, cut into 1-inch cubes
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon olive oil
4 slices whole grain bread
3 tablespoons curry dressing
2 tablespoons mango chutney (we used Major Grey’s)
1/3 cup toasted almond slices
8 slices of vine-ripened tomato (1/4 -inch thick)
1 cup mixed cut lettuce (romaine, iceberg, radicchio)
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375° F. Spread the almonds on a baking sheet. Bake until they become aromatic and appear shiny from the oils being released, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Combine the chicken, kosher salt and olive oil in a bowl.

Mix well. Spread the chicken mixture evenly onto a baking pan or cookie sheet. Bake until chicken is cooked through, 10 to 15 minutes. Allow to cool. Mix together the curry dressing and the chicken. At this point, the filling can be refrigerated and finished later, if desired. Lay out two slices of bread. Divide the chicken mixture evenly between them and spread with a fork. Spread 1 tablespoon of mango chutney on top of the chicken mixture. Sprinkle the toasted almonds onto each and lay out 4 tomato slices per sandwich. Divide the mixed lettuce evenly and add the top slice of bread.
Transfer to a cutting board and slice corner to corner.

Ya know, for all the food I eat, when it comes to English sandwiches I like the simplicity of a cucumber sandwich on soft, white bread. (Kick it up with white pepper and scallions)

Preferably eaten IN England!!

Love this thread. My faves:
1. Toasted cheese (open-faced grilled cheese) with HP sauce. And a side of cream of tomato soup.
2. What a Scottish friend used to call "egg banjos" -- a bacon butty with a fried egg, on a roll. We duplicate here in the US with a kaiser roll...
3. Smoked trout on homemade wheat bread from The Upwey Wishing Well in Dorset, as precursor to a yummy cream tea. I'll be there next week!
4. When I used to buy workday lunch from a little sandwich shop off Regent Street, my fave was corned beef (the canned kind) with Branston pickle on wheat bread. But I've had to put that on my banned list, now. Too much salt and other bad substances I didn't care about when I was 20!

I have never heard of Pret a Manger. Where are they located? I can't wait to get back to England so I can try a sandwich from them.
