MetroLisboa is, in my opinion, the most traveler-friendly Metro system in the world. I did a Photo-essay on the Oriente line back in '98 when it was opening for Expo'98. The stations are works of art. Each line has its own motif.

You may have to supplement with Tranvia (to Sintra) or Lisbon city bus, but most of your 'in Lisbon' transportation needs should be taken care of by Metro.

I often stay at Residencial Estrela do Saldanha next to Pasteleria Versailles (Avda de la Republica, 17) at the Duque de Avila exit (Saldanha station) of MetroLisboa. Carlos Ferreira, co-owner and manager has a web site and speaks pretty good English. It's convenient to everywhere

Elaine123,

We used the tram/bus/cable car systems provided by the city. They were great. I had read some reports on this site about crime on these modes of transportation but we were very lucky to not have any problems. The people of Lisbon were very friendly and helpful. Be sure and wear your walking shoes because the city is full of hills but so much fun. Lisbon is a city growing old with grace and so much history. I could go on and on...

Tram 28 is a great way to view Lisbon - especially as it makes its way thru the Alfama district ! It's not a 'tour', but part of everyday life in the city and a major way of getting in, thru and around it. Take it during the day on a workday for a real adventure. Somehow a weekend ride just isn't the same. ENJOY!
