What's the best luggage size for train travel in Italy?

Just curious. I've been to Venice several times with luggage ranging from just a backpack to a 27" suitcase.
It didn't take more than 30 seconds to on or off the vaporetto with any of them--including the 27".
For some reason I'm not getting the huge problem some people seem to have. does it take several hours to get on and off the vaporetto for some people when they have a suitcase?

As a woman(and maybe this is some of the lifting strength issue), it was difficult for me to lift the suitcase up over my head as was needed on the trains in Italy. It was the same issue lifting on and off the vaporetto.
The following trip we took 22 inch luggage to the South of France. It was much easier.
